Not trying to spin it at all. Saban is the "New Guy" in the SEC. Some recruits see all the attention from the media, and are curious. Same thing happened when Spurrier came back to the SEC. Everyone said he would own the SEC in 2 years. Hasn't happened. Let's see how much headway Saban has on signing day.
I'm not sure who said "he would own the SEC in 2 years" but it was a given that his biggest obstacle would be recruiting and it still is. By no means am I trying to be arrogant but I believe Saban at Alabama will get more four and five star recruits than Spurrier will at South Carolina. That's just my
Not fair to compare cause he just got there but I was surprised with Spurrier this year- SC is putting together a strong class. http://rivals100.rivals.com/teamrank.asp?SID=880
Interesting you mention this...seems to me that's something to look at when you have kids making visits secretly...perhaps, to avoid catching hell from his own town-folk? We expected an impact...but, NO ONE expected this quick of an impact on the recruiting side of things.
but terry, the sky's been so dark and dreary over tuscaloosa tech for so long the gumps grasp for any straw within reach. crossing your fingers and squinting your eyes shut while saying,"there's no place like bama, there's no place like bama" is not the same as a top 5 class. one man's trash is another man's treasure. looks to me like $atan went through CLM's garbage and picked out something flawed but servicable. 30+ mil buys a lot of expectations, but LD ain't the second coming.
As to the first point, I think how other own town folks treat you also depends perhaps on respect. I imagine if McKnight goes out of state (knock on wood), he would get less hell than if it was Davis, because of the way they handled recruiting. As to the second point, I see that as partly due to the fact that the other SEC teams he is "stealing" players from are loaded with talent, and the lure of early playing time. I don't want to belittle the talent Bama has, which I think should be pretty good; would the recruits be having the wrong impression that they can step right in?(given the weaker record of Bama, though not necessarily the lack of player talent) Terry, if you can share with us the information: what is the problem with the three coaches (as you mentioned, two with pink slips) there were there?
With $4mil dollar player payroll, you can sign who you want. Funny how Nick_the_prick is spending most of his time in LA. Miles has an easy answer for Prick's pitch, "does the Prick have back to back 11 wins seasons, NO, I coached those kids to dual 11's." Can't wait until we get the last laugh this fall in Gumpville.
Saban knows that he can get a lot of traction with recruiting because of LSU's continual success, and he is using them to his advantage.
