Exactly. What bothers me about this thread is what is being implied about Middleton. Applewhite, is a different story. He wasn't ready for the responsibility. I'd bet, if he was hired last year as your QB coach the same would be said by LSU fans. Good guy, don't get me wrong. But, he wanted to do things with the offense that didn't fit what the staff wanted as an offense. He'll be a good HC some day.
It won't bother me if the greyshirts are great recruits, but if he is one of our less talented recruits then I think we probably made a mistake. I had earlier broached the subject of undersigning, or at least not oversigning this year, because of the wealth of talent in LA next year. You had replied that if we didn't fill the scholarships they would be offered to walk-ons. Logically I can see this being customary, but not an official rule that must be adhered to. However, filling spots in next year's class with borderline recruits is questionable. That being my opinion, I understand that since we offered the scholarship already we really should do the honorable thing and let them come as a greyshirt now.
 That was were our skeptcism came from. We needed a QB coach which he was qualified for at the time. Bama fans were the ones defending him as an OC hire. And what is with all the Bear and Saban comparisions?:hihi:
All scholarships are given on a one-year basis and are renewed at the pleasure of the head coach. Scholarships are given to walk-ons when they earn one, not just to use up scholarships. We are limited to 85 athletes on scholarship. We must count on attrition from grades, transfers, misbehavior, or injuries to fit four 25-28 member classes into 85 and those things always happen. If not enough leave then a few players must be asked to grayshirt. If necessary to meet 85 in August, the coach can require a player to give up his scholarship.
Another good read from the Bayou Bengal Blog. It says that DeAndre Brown is making his announcement at 5pm tomorrow and them heading to LSU for a visit. That takes some of the speculation away. Also, RB Hall wanted to come visit and he was told that we were full. That must mean Les is really confident that Thomas is going to commit. http://www.bayoubengalblog.com/
Grayshirts typically aren't "great" recruits. They are guys that are raw & could use the time to develop physically, plus are truly commited to LSU, as other recruits would rather enroll right away at another school. Molton & Duplessis are the 2 names I've seen mentioned as possabilities. By "borderline recruits", I assume you mean based on talent. I don't see any guys in this class that don't look good enough to contribute at LSU. Duplessis looks the most like a "borderline recruit" and he's got some pretty good film - got his offer after a very good camp at LSU. LSU is not against telling commited prospects to "look around", but we don't do it with Louisiana guys. Our relationships with the schools/coaches is too important.
When Saban was here, we thought that was the only way to be successful. We though it was necessary for him to be an *******, and we didn't care because he was winning. At least we could say that here. Bama can't even say that - not yet at least. With Miles, we now understand that you can be a good person, work hard, and still win.
It's not hate, Saban did great things for LSU and I appreciate what he did. However that doesn't change the facts of his personality and how it affects his staff and turnover on it. Here is another brief write up from someone not blinded by the crimson fogged glasses. http://www.bayoubengalblog.com/
