Just because the defense may know whats coming when Shepard comes in the game, doesnt mean they can stop it. This aint RP. This a different set of circumstances. Holiday and Shepard are different circumstances, Holiday has straight line speed, Shepard can make anybody miss. I think your comparisons are a bit off. Shep will need to continue to develop, but whether he lines up at QB, WR, or some other formation, he has a greater chance at being effective, whether the defense knows or not. you still have to stop a play even if you know what it is.
yeah, that's what i was going to say. either way, it won't be any different than how trindon was used the last couple of seasons. once he was in the game, EVERYONE knew it was going to him. shep is more versatile than holliday, IMO. if we could use him in post situations, out of a slot, or really just getting him the ball PERIOD, it'll be tough to defend him. and like Red said, if they're focusing on shep, we go to trindon. if they focus on trindon, throw to lafell. if they focus on lafell throw to randall... if they focus on randall, shove it down their throats with scott. as long as we have a QB that can put the ball in the playmakers' hands, i don't see many offensive problems in the future for LSU! HOWEVER, if we don't have a center that can effectively get the ball to the QB it's a moot point, right? get well t-bob!!!!!!
I hope Shep throws it some, and with good results. I think RP lost a lot of effectiveness his soph season, since he ran it most of the time he was in the game (except when Flynn was injured and RP played the whole game, and then he showed he COULD throw the ball, VERY WELL). Harvin at QB in the wildcat formation was effective, but I think Shep would be a much bigger nightmare if he is also a passing threat from that spot. He doesn't have to be a JaMarcus Russell, but if he can hit a 15 yd. crossing route over the middle, it will open things up a LOT for us. I think he can do that, based on what I've seen. One would think we'd like to redshirt the other frosh QB from Miss., Garrett?
I see Shep in several WR packages, which could give defenses fits. You have him in some end around plays and defenses will have to drop back to respect the pass or pull up to respect the run, either way this creates problems. I like the possibilities of these type plays, it is going to be fun to watch.
well this is why i hope SOMEONE steps up and becomes a clear-cut starter at QB. that way we can rest easier knowing that we have some great talent to develop over the years. if it comes down to not having a definite starter in the fall, i think that would create some problems a la last season. if we know for sure that our man will be jefferson or lee going into the fall, then we can redshirt garrett and have him stockpiled. of course shep is NOT going to redshirt so we might as well use him as we please. but out of those three QBs someone realllly needs to step up. i'm all for competition and all of that, but we saw what could happen last year with an inexperienced (but talented) freshman QB. plus, he was a redshirt frosh, so he at least had some knowledge of the program/playbook. i know this may sound strange, but i have NO worries about this season. as far as winning/losing, that is tough to predict, but if LSU doesn't perform up to par i'm not so sure that things will stay the same around BR. you have great coaches, great talent and all things necessary for success. meltdowns like last season should not occur this season upcoming. i understand that the schedule is tough (when is it not?) but LSU should at least be competitive in every game. blowouts like UGA and UF, and meltdowns like at ARK had better not happen this season. losses like the Bama game are understandable. im just rambling on now, but it stems from a discussion that i had with a Bama fan who thinks that LSU will have at least three losses IN THE WEST alone. so i got kind of riled up. o:
Agreed. The Arky game, IMO, was a lack of bearing toward the end. I think UF will be the toughest but it's at home, so maybe that'll help. Ole Miss on the road will be tough. I think that if a comfy QB steps up, along with other leadership (defensively), all the other things will fall into place. I could be wrong. Bama fans......... :angryfire
In my opinion we should not even be having this conversation. Jefferson should be the starting QB no questions asked . Lee decision making is horrid couple that with the fact that Jefferson simply throws a better ball and can make things happen with his legs and makes better decisions, so rule lee out i dont care to ever see him line up under center again. I love shep but i think he is not a QB let's put him in the slot and watch those feet work....hands down overall and bye far Jefferson is the best chance we have at the QB slot...
Sounds like JJ is starting to claim the job outright, although Lee is still pushing him hard (and that's a very good thing). As for Shep, consider this. Folks are saying he's a slot receiver. But I am starting to think that his most dangerous position is at QB. I'm thinking he probably has far more skill at QB than Harvin (or Doucet) ever did. And that he won't contribute nearly as much as a WR as he would as a QB. Reading between the lines of what's being said from practices so far, and looking at his tape - when you think you've broken up the pass play, he spanks you with a 20+ yard scamper. And when you think you've covered the box so he can't run, he hits a receiver in stride and forces you to respect the pass. He'll play some slot this year and maybe next year. But I hope that's more of a feature than a standard. I want to see Shep at QB. And if that means at some point late this year or early next he takes over, then so be it.
Well, it's a forum thread. Opinions are kind of what we express here, so thanks for that one. :thumb: Truth be told, none of the passing looked great Saturday. As far as touch on the ball and accuracy, Lee looked every bit as good as everyone. The int's came from a swarming defense Saturday, not an inept QB. Also some problems at center made it hard for the QB's to get their hands on the ball quickly. Lee made some good decisions with regards to throwing, and he tucked it and ran at least once for about 10 yards. Same went for Garrett with his int's, and same for Jefferson who coincidentally took a long shot down field and it wobbled out of the sky about 10 yards behind the reciever. All I'm saying is, at this point it would be pretty bone-headed to write off ANY of the QB's we have. Yes, Shep is absolutely a QB, just not as much of a passer. He's got the mind for it though, the game is in slow motion to him. I can't remember the last time I saw a kid that young look that good against what I consider a pretty strong SEC Defense. The 1st string defense only had to touch him for them to call him down, and they couldn't even do that most of the time. But they were all over everyone else. No, not by as far as one might think. That said, I'd go with Jefferson as of right now, too. He does have a better command of the offense because of his experience, but as far as everything else he's not as far ahead of the other QB's as you might like to think. Don't let the bowl game last season fool you. There's a lot more competition at QB this off-season than you may realize.
