LSU's First 2014 COMMITMENT is a good one... Kain Daub --- Plays MLB Per the link below... http://louisianastate.scout.com/a.z?s=107&p=9&c=8&toinid=748&yr=2014 > One of the top 2014 prospects from Florida > Offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Ohio State, South Carolina and UCLA.
24/7 Recruiting has him listed the #1 player in FL, the #1 Inside LBer in the US, and the #6 overall player in the country for 2014. His grade is 99 of which as of now, LSU has no one remotely close to a grade of 99 for the 2013 class.
I agree with that. That being said, find the video on the guy. The guy is big and fast and when he hits you, you stay hit. And the irony of ironies....goes to the same high school that Tim Tebow went to.
Agree about Chavis, but all the other schools who are recruiting him aren't gonna just quit because he committed to LSU. I think I'll wait a bit before getting too excited just yet. I just might though if he's still saying the same things about LSU this time next year.
I'm not betting the ranch (maybe the south 40) on him remaining an LSU commit but 2 things are definitely in LSU's favor, actually 3 things. 1) his family was with him...that is huge because as we know from the past, if the mom or dad are against something, it makes it a lot tougher. Apparently, they agreed with his decision 2) what is LSU's record of losing verbals before NSD...answer about 1 in a class...maybe he will be the one, we'll see 3) His top 3 going into the camp were LSU, Alabama, and FSU with Florida not there. So, if the kid wants to be in the SEC, he won't be swayed by Florida (don't know if that is a factor with him but it is a factor with a ton of kids, probably one reason, Florida doesn't want Florida State in the conference). Anyway, I'll give the Vegas chances he sticks with LSU for 1.5 years (80%).
I think we are definitely seeing the advantage of John Chavis taking effect. After being at Tennessee so long and also perhaps having a chance to become a head coach, I think there was a delay between Chavis making his impact both in LBer recruiting and defensive players seeing how the scheme would work here. But last year's very talented and enormous class of LBers (best in LSU history by far) was obviously a great sign, and LSU basically went after 1 LBer this class (Melvin Jones) and although is a LA kid, LSU still got him. Now, this early commit out of Tim Tebow's old high school...if LSU keeps him, that will be very impressive. And if anyone can complain about any aspect of defensive recruiting over the last several years, it has been the LBer position. Even Shepard and Riley that panned out pretty well were only 3* by all the services and didn't have that many offers. As far as Muschamp, I put him in the same "watch category" as Derek Dooley. Both remind me quite frankly of Mike Archer...good assistants but are they really head coach material...especially this young. I think this is Derek Dooley's last year at Tennessee (he will be forced out) and Muschamp better have a darn better year than last season or he will be #1 on the HC Hot Seat in the 2013 season.
I wouldn't have used Tyson Jackson as an example but that is just me and some others who think he was way, way overrated. And just because the Chiefs took him very early doesn't prove anything. He hasn't done anything with the Chiefs. He had IMO 1 really good year at LSU (SO season I think) but other than that, he got along by playing next to Dorsey. The reason his sacks went down horribly after his SO year was that he had one move on the pass rush...the outside move. When the OT started figuring out that he wasn't ever going to spin back to the inside, he was toast on the pass rush and it showed in his bad sack numbers which BTW the media pointed out many times. I bet the Chiefs wish they had that draft pick over again. Like I said, Sheppard and Riley DID surprise big time to the upside as you stated but it wasn't just the services that missed on them. Go back and look at the offers...neither was a national recruit by any stretch. They have a few good SEC offers...that was it. But there have been a ton of misses at LBer...Cutrera OK at best but didn't start a lot, Odom a criminal and booted off team, Beckwith of course a winner along with Riley and Sheppard, Baker a good one but not great because of his size. Then you get to Hatcher the hybrid S/LB (glad his eligibility ran out... man I have never seen a guy take poorer angles and be out of position so much), Muncie a non-factor, Welter a non-factor, Randle flunked out, Francois not a very good one IMO. Minter I agree with you 100% and I think he is underrated. Barrow and Jones simply haven't played enough and could produce or may not produce. This is their key year obviously to show themselves. Only a lot of playing time will tell. Anyway, I don't think LSU has been in danger of being classified as LBer U over the last several years and I think anyone would readily admit that if the defense had a weakness last year, it certainly was at LBer. Minter was the best...the other two guys (when 3 LBers were out on the field) were just there IMO. Derek Dooley simply looks lost out there, just like Mike Archer, and their recruiting is poor for a school with a 100,000+ seat stadium. And to be fair to him, even if he was qualified, the way Lanie Kiffin just screwed Tennessee made it awfully tough for anyone to succeed early. But I judge Dooley by what he did/didn't do at La Tech. Sonny Dykes has come in there and in 2 years, I have seen more improvement in La Tech than Dooley did in like 5 or 6 seasons. I also think Muschamp is gone in 2 years as I said before and you also stated. Last year, Florida got blown out by the big boys and really didn't have that much talent. Maybe Urban Warfare saw the writing on the way but Florida looked bad. And they don't seem to be recruiting that great considering they are in probably the best HS football state in the country. As far as John Chavis goes, I don't think there is a snowball's chance he will take a HC job now. He and Miles seem to really like each other, he isn't a spring chicken to start over at another school, he gets paid almost $1 million with no pressure, and Miles being an offensive guy leaves him alone. Seriously, what more could the guy ask? I think Petrino will not get a high profile job in the SEC. He is almost in the Outlander camp like Mike Leach the former Texas Tech coach who ended up at Spokane at WSU.
