I saw this in a thread over at TigerDroppings: TigerDroppings Anyone here confirm that LSU actually played the Russian national team in men's basketball? And a link or recap would be great! I've been unable to find anything myself. LSU sports should have a 'Ask a question" function for stuff like this. :geauxtige :bball: :LSU231:
You can find the all time records / opponents in the media guide. Section VII, page 9 shows: 1989-90 RECORD: 23-9, 12-6 11-10 Russia (H)* W, 114-109 I'm pretty confident I was at the game, but I don't remember anything about it. The UNLV and Loyola Marymount games stand out in my memory from that season...
Yep. Dale liked to schedule touring foreign national teams. The cold war era Russian basketball team were actually pro's but they played amateur ball and tuned up their game every season by touring America and playing pre-season games against top college teams.
Hehe red55, I found it it ironically funny to see your name in a thread about Russian BB Thanks for your reply!
i remember they gave out some Tshirts too. something about peristroika. it was a russian/soviet team, but im not sure it was THE russian/soviet team.
It was THE Soviet National team. The legendary Alexander Gomelski was coach. Arvydas Sabonis was on that team. Dale had recruited him and he was set to attend LSU, but the Soviets would not let him leave.
