We'll have our work cut out for us in Game 1. They're ace, Jonathan Gray, is no joke. He's 10-2 with a 1.59 ERA in 119 IP. Some have even touted him as the No. 1 overall pick in the next MLB draft.
Anyone know anything about the Adderall situation with Gray? Is Adderall not a banned substance in the NCAA?
My OU buddy says Gray is out. One note, athletes are using the "Adderall" excuse to cover for steriods these days. It is a cover up for a suspension without the steriod stigma.
OU's coach and Gray had a press conference an hour or two ago where they reiterated that Gray will play vs LSU, which is what OU and the OU coach have been saying all along but yeah, like red said, it's a banned-substance by the NCAA. this is how Glenn Guilbeau explains the loophole: "Oklahoma ace Jonathan Gray tested positive for NCAA-banned substance Adderall in MLB drug test. since NCAA member Oklahoma didn't administer test, it will allow Gray to pitch despite positive test for NCAA banned substance" i wonder if Adderall is something Gray took to stay up late to study for a test, or if it's something he takes while he pitches. i would think it would give you two big advantages as a pitcher: 1) it helps you go extra innings. Gray has thrown 5 complete games in 16 starts this season (including in each of his last two outings: Big 12 Tournament and NCAA Regional). per USAToday: Adderall acts as a powerful stimulant — an alertness aid for students in an all-night study session, a pick-me-up for those wishing to extend the party, or, in the case of an athlete looking to gain an edge, an energy boost ... "It's a stimulant," NFL senior vice president of labor law and policy Adolph Birch says. "When taken in a non-medically-indicated, non-therapeutic use, it's a stimulant that can combat fatigue and feelings of fatigue on a playing field." ... Amphetamines have several performance-enhancing qualities, experts say. The drugs can disconnect mental from physical fatigue, allowing an athlete to push through tiredness. 2) it boosts your focus. when you're a pitcher, you've got to tune everything out (the crowd, etc) and focus on hitting your pitches. i'd think Adderall would be great for that. kinda the opposite of what Packers DE Mike Neal said when defending Adderall: “Focusing better isn't going to make you a better athlete. You can be whatever athlete you want to be but focusing better doesn't make you a better athlete. It's not going to make you do anything you do physically better.” but, like i said, that assumes Gray is taking it while he pitches. he might only have taken it to stay up and study for a test. regardless, it's possible some people in the Box gives him hell for it like these people are saying: Jordan Esco @Jordan_Esco 2h According to LSU fan who just called KREF, all Oklahoman's have no integrity b/c of this Jonathan Gray situation Jason @Bravesoul79 21h Cheaters Brett Lirette @LeeRhett 16h How much fun will LSU fans have with this? Amy LeBlanc @AmyLSU 1h 107.3 call radio guys had a great idea this AM: Pill night at The Box this Friday. Lets show some love! Kevin Russo @krusso14 --How hard of a time will #LSU fans give #OU Jonathan Gray when he pitches at Alex Box stadium this weekend? It'll be brutal. --#LSU fans will give Jonathan Gray a very hard time when he pitches at Alex Box. It will be brutal. --#OU should just go ahead and suspend Jonathan Gray now. I fear what he'll endure this weekend at #LSU --Jonathan Gray has no idea of the wrath he will receive from #LSU fans this weekend. #OU should just go ahead and suspend him LOL --I can imagine how many signs will be made and how loud the chants #OU pitcher Jonathan Gray will receive at Alex Box Stadium vs. #LSU
I can't decide what's more absurd, OU saying,"We didn't administer the test, so its OK that he failed it," or the NCAA's (so far) silence on the matter. No way this is over.
How will Gray deal with the crowd at the box and all the distraction? Pop another adderrall. No sweat.
