You're not alone, buddy! I'm with you! Instead of Nike working WITH each school to come up with a unique uniform that rewards their tradition and history, here's a novel idea: We HAVE a timeless, unique AND traditional uniform as it ALREADY stands.
Actually, the color of the helmet from that Arkansas game is the official school color, known as "old gold". We wore that color on the helmets until Dietzel changed it. LSU's old gold is distinguished by being much darker than ND's, which is darker than Wash, FSU, Army, Navy or BC's. I found it too dark for the logo to show up well. I prefer the look of the "sunflower yellow" gold we usually wear as well. GEAUX TIGERS
another note about those uniforms from that Arkansas game: those vertical stripes on the arms was something we had in the past, as you can see from these two pics below of pro HOFers YA Tittle and Steve Van Buren from during their days at LSU. i wish they would have put them lower on the arm like we used to have them (mid-arm to just above the elbow), instead of way up right underneath the shoulder like we did vs Arkansas (we could have do so by wearing pro combat undershirts with sleeves that went down midarm, just like Oregon did in the BCS title game, putting their numbers on their mid-arms on sleeve of the undershirt instead of the jersey) i also didn't like how they put gold in between the stripes instead of leaving them just purple on white like we used to have them i didn't like how they put the new logo on the old gold helmets, either. i didn't like the uniform as a whole, i didn't like how they took some elements from different uniforms and made up new elements to make those uniforms. i'd wish they'd just do a straight-up throwback, do the best reproduction they can of an actual uniform we wore in the past (for example, Washington did this a few years ago vs USC, and it looked awesome) i hope this time they either just do our normal uniforms (like how they did with Alabama) or they do the best reproduction they can of one of the uniforms we wore in the past, even if it's a throwback to those Bert Jones era uniforms with the ugly helmet logo we first adopted. i'd love to see us come out in that or any of the uniforms we've worn back in the day
I've always been amused by the fan's extremely strong opinion about uniform design and colors. And this strong opinions are coming from people who really don't give a rat's a$$ about fashion outside of sports. I'm beginning to think this is tied in to the strong anti Les Miles feelings in the fan base. You see, it pertains to the fan's self identity. People were hating Miles...even though we were 8-0 last year because we weren't winning with flair and some fans identified personally with LSU so much so that when the so called sports media was laughing at Miles and his lucky, goofy ways, people sub consciously thought the media was laughing at them. Winning isn't always everything. People are so concerned with color scheme and coordination that when something changes, they hate it with a passion because..."It's my life, and you can't tell me what clothes to put on....not even my mother does that any more." Look at the strong reaction to LSU changing the tiger symbol on the shirts and merchandise to "Toonces". This goes deeper than symbols...it has to do with self identity and self worth. I'm not criticizing. Maybe that's what makes LSU fans so great.
Jihad on you purple shirt infidels! I will keel you! Who? The last of them seem to have melted away after last season. Have any of the usual suspects been ranting about Les here lately?
The imagery of the Go Team, the Chinese Bandits, and of course, Billy Cannon, turned me into a LSU fan in 1958. Six years old, in North Carolina, listening to games on a radio. Somehow, divine intervention, perhaps, the AM signal came in loud and clear on Saturday nights.
Toonces is a horribly designed image. On top of that insult, they got raped on the design fee. You could have gotten that logo on any design auction website for $1000. And LSU would have still been ripped off.
LSU was hugely popular in the radio days because they played night games when fans had come home from their local games . . . and . . . because LSU football was broadcast on two 50,000 watt clear-channel frequency stations--WWL in New Orleans and KWKH in Shreveport. At night these two stations covered the entire US.
This has nothing to do with Les Miles. People get so defensive around here if there is any post that doesn't praise Les Miles. Not everything is an attack on Les Miles.
I would have worn throwbacks for the 2008 GTHOM game, when LSU honored the '58 National Championship team. Specifically, I would have moved the TV numbers and used the stylized helmet numbers. Then again, LSU has never lost a game with that particular style, so why chance it now. I thought the 09 Ark unis should have had gold pants. They are pretty much as big a part of the LSU tradition as the white jerseys. GEAUX TIGERS
