One thing going for us, well both teams, is that this will be the most talked-about, anticipate, and watch game between a D-1 and D-1AA in the history of D-1 and D-1-AA games. Sure, I added a little for dramatic affect but App State, with it's 3 national titles and it's upset of a top 5 team in the "Almighty Big 10" has done enough to gain credence as a pretty big opponent. They are certainly not the worst team we'll face and will be better than one or two of our conference opponents. Not to mention the fact that writers are saying the LSU stepped up to the plate to face App State when other school refused to play them. All in all, it's a good situation.
Sure it will be, but only for the outside chance that they beat us and CFB has another "great upset" to start the year. If we beat them, and especially beat them handily, we will not receive any great credit for this. If we make it to the NCG again(miracle), we will not hear the end of it. Not so much about this team, but our entire schedule will take a beating, much like OSU did last year. No, they are one of the better teams, but still not in Division I and the negative perception will remain about our schedule strength. They won't say that about the other three we scheduled and App St was added last. All in all, it is what it is. Good situation? Not so sure.
But this year we must pay a coach $2 million more than we did in any of those years. Thats about the income of the 8th game. LSU needs that 8th game or it can't pay for all of the minor sports either. Football pays for everything.
Which is one of the reasons behind hiking that tradition fund we pay every year (going to double in the next couple of years). Plus increasing the prices of individual tickets as well. I'm not saying every year give up a home game, but if doing it once in a while will help us land a bigger opponent I think LSU could handle it financially.
But computers only account for 1/3 of the BCS. The other 2/3 are from subjective polls, so they carry more weight. For us in 03, you are correct. The computers and schedule were what got us in.
And when the voters lok and see AU playing the local High School JV circuit, they ain't gonna give them any slack or benfit of the doubt. USC and OU get the nod. We jumped people in the human polls (this past season), because they looked and saw we played the better looking schedule, so they jumped us above the other 2 loss teams. Had we not had a top 10 OOC team out there, the voters may not have given us that lift.
I still think Auburn was just unlucky. 3 doesn't fit into 2 and I don't believe Auburn played as hard of an SEC schedule as we did this year. Going undefeated in the SEC in 2004 is not the same as it would be now. And a big OOC win for them that year may not have been enough to get them in, but oh well, they still got rings for their season :thumb: And we got ours for this year :crystal:
no matter how much lipstick you put on the pig it will always be better to play a bcs opponent than a d 1 aa opponent
Duderino, What I find interesting is that ASU is bearing the brunt of all of the cupcake talk...apparently b/c we were the ones who rounded out your schedule. I think an overlooked point is that this has BEEN scheduled for a few years. Your ath. dept. just elected to move it to this year to fill a need for both of us. I would think that some of the bile should be directed at the OTHER squads who are filling up your schedule. I recall reading a point made in the Detroit Free Press last Sept. 2nd that said (paraphrased) "if you are going to eat a cupcake, then eat a cupcake. Don't try to eat crushed glass and tell yourself it was a cupcake". Not sure why that popped into my head.... could be all of the empty space..."Nature abhors a vacuum " Take care GO APPS!!
Because despite the fact that ASU is BETTER than those other teams, the fact that they're 1-AA, it looks worse. Add to the fact that LSU talked about getting a BCS school on the schedule, and it looks like we puzzed out of playing a "big boy" for a 1-AA school.
