I've been wrong before. I had Gatorade in mind when talking about national appeal for a product created by a university. Of course, there is a lot less competition for sports drinks then there is for beer. They may not want to go national. Even a regional product could bring good revenue in for the university. Especially beer......in Louisiana
He did. Although he went to Ole Miss first so you know his decision making ability is suspect right from the start.
Research units are being drastically cut and eliminated and LSU has a couple of million to spend on starting a brewery . . . typical.
I think the plan is for the brewery to be profitable and contribute back to the University to help minimize the cuts they have to make. Yeah. Just like Gatorade. It'll never catch on. :thumb:
Yeah, I remember this idea being pitched when state funding first started to dry up. LSU really got caught with its pants down when the economy tanked, with its heavy dependence on state appropriations instead of focusing on building up its endowment and private revenue streams. LSU also knows who's buttering its bread. The same people who pour their life savings into LSU merch, season tickets and TAF fees wouldn't dream of voluntarily donating a dime to the academic side. Research units don't pack TS on Saturday nights, and that's all a lot of people in this state care about.
I agree on the first thing. Gatorade, other than having Gator in the name, doesn't look like a cheap, local product. This logo isn't very Florida specific. The new logo is even better in that regard. They are alot better than the Tiger Sauce example I posted earlier.
The units being cut bring in millions of research dollars. This is not about making money, its about getting the LSU "brand" out there. I predict right now this LSU beer will go the way of the LSU soft drink from 15 years ago. Nowhere.
I think this will follow the route of most original concept food and beverage businesses. Start locally and heavily cater to that market. If it starts to gain a following they will expand and re brand to a more neutral image as they grow.
So you're saying that LSU is cutting departments that generate a real profit for the university? I find that hard to believe. Just because they bring in millions in research dollars does not me they they are profitable. They could be spending even more. Of course it is. Very little isn't. The LSU brand is already out there. They don't need to sell beer to do that. This is might be true. However, it doesn't have anything to do with the motivation behind why LSU is creating it.
