I never said it made it right. I did say pitch for pitch throwing underhand is less strenuous than throwing overhand.
I've got 2 ex pitchers in HS and college now saying it was nothing to throwing 2000 or more a week including practice and maybe even way more if you are trying to learn a new pitch. So like I said, it happens. It may not happen to every pitcher but it does happen.
Meyers was Escobedo's coach at ASU. She's my absolute favorite rise ball pitcher. And it's funny because there is some disagreement as to whether hers was really a rise or just a screw or curve that was placed high. All that comes from motion and delivery. The only thing tougher for most batters is a low outside drop. Brutal.
A friend of mine pitched in high school and she said same thing. when learning new pitches, they'd throw alot. She warmed up one day to replace a future all american who was having a bad day. (they lost 19-1). She threw cl.se to 500 pitches and never got in the game. She threw every day of the year learning new pitches.
As many times as I've seen it happen, I still get amused at seeing batters swing on a rise ball that's shoulder high. You had a chance to see Osorio pitch this season? (Vs OU, Friday night on ESPN) She's really starting to show a lot of potential with her rise and fast ball as her two "go to" pitches. Since the A&M series back at the end of March, she's allowed nine earned runs in 61.5 innings for an ERA of 0.96 (That includes games against 3 of the top 11 scoring teams in the nation, and 4 of the top 22.) For a frosh, that's pretty damn strong.
I've seen a lot of major league hitters too that swing at a high fastball that's obviously out of the strike zone. It must look like its going to be a strike to the batter.
Uh oh you've done it now. Wait for everyone to start calling you out saying its bullshit. she also said that you don't want to go too long between days pitched because of muscle mass. True or not I have no idea.
EXACTLY. The next day a coach friend of mine sent me a text to tell me the team that beat us, lost. First thing I asked was, "Did they even show up?" She said no. The team that played us 13 innings the day before was spent and got beat badly to a lower seeded team.
