Maybe a little of both. Lots of situations going on there. 1 out...defense is capable of the double play so "protecting" that runner on 3rd is priority. If they turn the double, whether she runs or not is moot. Most likely, she knows that her role is to "hold" but stretch so that she can delay the throw to 1st without drawing it herself and get tagged if she's too far off. The 3rd base coach knows the runner....maybe she's a slug butt, IDK. But in that situation, lots of things happen. It's noisy, adrenalin takes over and players can think they know better or the right thing to do and they override the base coach. I have seen it a million times and age/maturity reduce it, but it still happens. Let's say she runs, they throw home instead of to 1st, she's out at the plate, and now they have 2 outs and the lead runner is now on 1st, instead of 3rd.
Rule of thumb is you don't want to make your first out at home so in that scenario, tough call. You see them witches toss that pea around? They've got cannons.
She'd better be at 2nd. I'd probably roll the dice and send her. With all the excitement with the play at the plate, who knows. Either end up with runner in scoring position or we come back tomorrow and start all over.
I just watched the post-game presser. Coach said that the ball was hard hit and the throws were "bang bang". In addition, the runner hesitated (held) for just a second but at that point and the speed of the ball and play, that hesitation means you can't go. Coach said that once she hesitated, it was the right thing not to go. Coach also mentioned that Michigan played a little uptight and tentative pretty much the entire game. Explanation starts at 1:44
