Right, the concentration of those bonfire structures is in the Gramercy/Lutcher/Paulina area (St. James Parish), but you can find a scattering of them along the levee in neighboring St. John and Ascension Parishes. For example, according to the website that I found those pics on, they say they drove north up River Road from New Orleans, and once they got to Reserve, LA -- they started spotting bonfire structures sporadically along the levee until the got to the Gramercy/Lutcher/Paulina area, where they found bonfire structures lining the levee side-by-side for miles. They say that battleship was built by the Gramercy Fire Department. www.650motorcycles.com/CajunChristmas.html
Speaking of burning things in association with a college football rivalry, I know that Texas A&M has a tradition of building and burning a large bonfire structure to get them fired up for the game against the Longhorns.
From the LSU student newspaper: LSU, Ole Miss to student body: "Name that Rivalry" -- 12:09 p.m. - News Update
Over on an Ole Miss discussion thread, several Ole Miss students reported that they received this email on May 1st: Interesting that the above link for the vote appears to be a broken link now -- maybe because the voting period is now over? The Ole Miss students say they got that email sent to them on May 1st (seven days ago). Also, it's nteresting that the five names the Ole Miss students are voting on are different than the five names the LSU students are voting on, especially since the email stated that: "With naming the game, the first step involved the Senates of Ole Miss and LSU collaboratively selecting 5 potential names for the game. Now, it is your turn." Both have the Magnolia Bowl, Magnolia Classic, and The Duel Under the Oaks in their top five. However, the other two names LSU students are voting on are the Southern Showdown and Southern Shoot-Out, while the other two names Ole Miss students are voting on are the Duel for the Delta and the Battle for the Golden Magnolia (which would be similar to the "Battle for the Golden Boot" match-up between LSU and Arkansas). The vote at the Ole Miss thread is currently: 52% - Magnolia Classic 24% - Duel Under the Oaks 20% - Duel for the Delta 4% - Magnolia Bowl (the "Battle for the Golden Magnolia" was not included as a choice in the poll)
I thought this Ole Miss guy's comment was pretty amusing: If they want to come up with a trophy I would suggest an empty Jim Beam bottle. OM fans and players have dodged many of them in Tiger Stadium and there have been many consumed in the Grove and Vaught-Hemingway.
