i get the marquee go-to guy in this argument is RP. but besides him, les doesn't have a rep like you make it sound.

saban, meyer, richt, etc have tons more quantity than the hat.

unless you're saying every big time college program has to deal with a bad kid every now and then. then i agree.

RP, Odom, Allen, and many others have been "dealt" with by Miles during his tenure...but like you said, it happens everywhere.

    To LSUDolemite---

Still not a good analogy, because if by experience dealing with problem child you mean dismissing them from the program, then spot on...because that's what happened to every one of them eventually. And in each scenario, I'm pretty sure it was the right thing to do. But that doesn't show that Miles can transform a problem child into a productive player/student/human being.

    Huh?

So if you leave your front door unlocked, you deserve to get robbed???

I'm a girl...I've had friends violently date raped...and I've had male friends falsely accused of rape. I've seen both sides of the barrel, so to speak, and I understand how devastating sexual assault is AND how devastating the accusation of said sexual assault can be to someone who is innocent.

That said, NO ONE asks to be assaulted (and this included unwanted groping in a bar setting) just because they're dressed or certain way or happen to be 'hot' looking or pretty...just as no one deserves to be mugged just because they're on a dark street, and no one deserves to be robbed just because they leave their door unlocked.

And having a ton of experience working in bars with drunk girl friends and drunk guy friends, I understand that 'things' happen that people later regret when sober. But I certainly expect the freaking leaders of the freaking football team to understand that they're under a microscope and not to get out of control in bars, not to drink too much while also using a fake ID, and not to lie to their freaking coach after the fact.

From what I've heard and read, ZM has been nothing but on the straight and narrow since he was kicked off of the UGA team. It is entirely possible that he has learned from his mistake and understands that he needs to maintain control of himself if he wants to play QB at a major college. If so, I'd welcome him at LSU...I just hope he has learned a little self control.

I didn't mean to make it sound like Les somehow has a habit of going after bad kids or has more troubles than any other coach. I was just referring to Perrilloux.

I was going for quality rather than quantity. You're right, everyone has to deal with it. But as far as the sheer amount of damage done to a program as a result of a single problem child in the past few years (not including NCAA sanctions), Ryan Perrilloux takes the cake. It's been over 2 years since he last set foot in Baton Rouge and the QB position is still in shambles. Ohio State didn't even have this kind of headache during the Maurice Clarett saga.

Lots of coaches think they can take a "troubled youth" and get them back on the straight and narrow. Sometimes it works, other times not. You can't stay snake-bitten forever, but I just hope Les and LSU end up on the winning side of that equation for once with Mettenberger.

FYI as discussed in the recruiting forum he eventually admitted that he made a mistake, appeared remorseful. What apparently go him in hot water was lying to Richt initially and denying what happened. Personally I'd have to meet him and get to know a bit before deciding if he should be at LSU. Being thats not going to happen, I trust that Miles and company will do the right thing.

So what happens if he comes down here were the Louisiana ladies and booze is aplenty and turns into the next Cecil Collins?

Wasn't it a bit more than "just" a grope?

If he turns into the next CC we will be screwed. I wasn't there, no idea how much touching was involved and any amount of unwanted touching is too much in my book. Hopefully, Miles and staff are savy enough to take your concerns into consideration. Thats all I got.

One thing about CC and, for example, Ryan Perilloux, was their inability to stop certain behavior after getting in trouble the first time. CC's issues are well documented. RP simply could not control himself despite numerous warnings to stay on the straight and narrow. ZM has not repeated the behavior that got him kicked off the UGA team (both the drinking/groping and the after-the-fact lying)...and from what I've read, is avoiding the situations that got him into trouble when he was at UGA. That in and of itself, if true, shows that he is not ruled by urges beyond his control.

He could be a calculating POS who simply understands that he has to act a certain way to play for a real college, or he's sincerely learned from his past mistakes. In either case, it doesn't sound YET like he's not capable of staying out of trouble...but I need more time before really believing this.
