It does seem like there's a lot of turnover at that position. Really odd. I admit, I don't follow LSU politics like I do sports, so there's probably a reason for it that I don't know about.

There's been a few bad fits, and like has been said, the one guy who really made a difference IMO was Emmert and he had higher aspirations. I have to say I was pretty excited when I heard the rumor last year that he was coming back. Lucky me, I have Space Cadet O'Keefe's signature on my diploma.

He may be a horrible choice, only time will tell, but how many employers let the employees pick their boss? Just asking, because id like to send in my resume. :)

I know next to nothing about this area but just looked at my LSU diploma ('99) and Emmert was the Chancellor at the time and Jenkins was the President. I remember having a favorable opinion of Jenkins at the time and don't think I knew much about Emmert until after I left.

I didn't realize O'Keefe was so bad and vaguely remember the faculty being upset about how they handled his tenure (I think). Wasn't he also in a plane crash shortly after leaving LSU but survived?

The only thing I know about F. King is this thread and his wiki page. His education and job experience are impressive but that is probably par for the course (for this type of position). I did think it was pretty cool that he played basketball in college and was known to play pickup games with the students at his last university. Just sounds a little different than your typical PhD academia guy.

Working in academia is very different than working at Sears. Faculty are used to selecting their own departmental chairmen. They don't select their deans and administrators but they are usually consulted as a part of the section process. Neglecting to get any input at all from faculty just isn't done. No Chancellor can succeed without faculty cooperation. It makes no sense to create a bad mix of chancellor and faculty for political reasons, you only have to see the disaster that was O'Keefe. If F'King Alexander doesn't get on board with the faculty and students very quickly and show some independence from the very political BoS, he will have a tough time succeeding. He'll be gone within five years, like his predecessors. It's starting to become clear that the largely Jindal-appointed BoS prefers high turnover at the top to prevent another long-term, popular and powerful Chancellor/President from emerging.

I'm struggling to understand the details of how faculty should be consulted. Is it a formal (or informal?) group process in which each department head is invited to a roundtable discussion and encouraged to provide their opinions? Is that followed by a vote? If there are some department heads that feel strongly for a particular candidate but other heads feel strongly against, how are those resolved? Or is there an established faculty committee with various levels of seniority that make the final (collective) recommendations to the BoS?

It takes two parties to cooperate, and faculty like to play little political games of their own. I still believe Johnny Jones was a political hire also, but he deserves a chance to succeed or fail on his own merits, and so does Alexander.

*Questions above for a typical university that would consult the faculty as red suggests. I realize LSU did not follow this process.
