It is insane how this season is turning out with the non-SEC NC contenders imploding. LSU has already played a murderous schedule. And to win the NC they likely will still have to beat an Arkansas team that has really picked up their game in November and is now looking like one of the more formidable teams in the nation. Then beat Georgia who overcame a bad start and is now a solid team (better than the Baylors, Iowa states etc. Nobody would be shocked if Georgia beats a top 10 team), then beat Alabama (again). Assuming LSU wins out, has any other college champion in history had to play such a tough schedule? Right now LSU is like the 1972 Miami Dolphins, the only undefeated team in NFL history. But LSU will have to beat their toughest opponent twice along the way--the Dolphins didnt have to do that. Consider this: 1. Almost everyone agrees that LSU is the class of the nation. Yet, LSU is the ONLY team that has to be undefeated to win the National Championship. A host of one loss schools can win it. But a one loss LSU? No chance. 2. Any rematch (no matter who) is unfair to LSU at this point. You keep throwing the best in the nation against LSU and sooner or later they will lose a game. A rematch with an elite opponent is like telling the 72 Dolphins that they have to beat the Redskins twice. Once wasnt good enough. Hell, let Tulane play LSU often enough and they will win eventually. Rematches suck unless its 2 of 3. 3. If LSU loses to Arkansas they might be excluded from a BCS game? How idiotic a system is that? 4. Maybe the SEC champion should be determined some other way than East vs West. Maybe by BCS ranking? When the East and West are as unbalanced as they are now you end up with an inferior team getting a shot while more deserving teams sit. It also becomes a "trap game" with the heavy underdog having nothing to lose and all the pressure on the favorite. On the other hand, likely LSU/Alabama/Arkansas would much rather play a Georgia than each other again. 5. Amazing that the SEC has won 5 NC in a row given the killer schedule the champion will have to play, plus having to win the SEC title game. Its a hell of a lot easier to go undefeated in any of the other conferences than in the SEC. Lets say Arkansas beats LSU and Boise St and Oklahoma St. were still undefeated. Then the NC would likely be Boise St. vs Okl St. with the SEC one loss teams excluded. 6. This season shows unequivocally that defense wins football games. We have a servicable offense. Not great, but decent. Certainly not an offense for the ages. But the defense? Thats why LSU can survive a murderous schedule.
Great post. You took the words out of my mouth. It irritates the crap out of me that Alabama almost is getting a pass into the BCSCG and has the revenge motive going for them. If LSU wins out, to me it is the most difficult season a team ever faced. Oregon was rated #3 when we beat them in week 1, Alabama was #2, and Arkansas will be rated #3 when we play them this week. Eleven down, three to geaux. :LSU231: :crystal:
Excellent post -- very well stated. I'll add only this to your point #6: We don't have an offense for the ages for sure, but amazing that we are still putting up nearly 40 points a game! :geauxtige
you know roynav your exactly right! this strentgth of schedule bs doesnt take into account how good a team is or what they are ranked WHEN YOU PLAY THEM!! and imo this years lsu schedule is really hell on wheels!! if we beat arky aaand uga, aand alabama AGAIN!, then i have to put this team right up there as one of the greatest teams in cfb history!!!!:LSU231::geaux::crystal::crystal::crystal::crystal:and counting!!1
With all due respect to iststl, you could very well make the case for the "best team ever" if we run the table.
Arkansas game is at home, national title game is in New Orleans. No excuses. We could play the Packers at this point and I'd feel good about it.
