True enough... When I think of Iowa players who we fans use to epitomize who we think we are, it's Nile Kinnick (stadium/statue/Heisman)... then Alex Karras, Tim Dwight, and Bob Sanders.... maybe Reggie Roby to some extent. When I think of LSU, it's Billy Cannon, Jim Taylor and Y.A. Tittle. Who am I missing? Jerry Stovall?
From his humble beginnings at Iowa Alex Karras went on to champion the right of former football players to star in sitcoms where they are the adoptive father's of minorities. Seriously, I did not know he went to Iowa.
holy crap, i had no idea he was Mongo. I think Tim Dwight has to be my favorite Hawkeye of all time. Dude was lightning returning punts.
dude thats too ancient. bert jones, michael brooks, henry thomas, leonard marshall, dalton hilliard, alan faneca, kevin mawae. id think most lsu fans think of jones because he was so good in the nfl and probably hilliard and hokie gajan because they were pretty good with the saints.
I forgot Bert Jones. Like your list, we've had Andre Tippett, Ed Podolak, Noonan, Niland, Paul Krause, Kevin Casper, Bob Jeter, Greenway... of course, the Hilgenbergs... and others... but their names seldom come up when you ask someone to name a few players that have defined the Hawkeyes over the years. My guess is, other than perhaps Bert Jones, those other players may not get a mention.
im pretty sure each of them were all pro. but i get your point. if you ask some guy in pennsylvania, theyd probably think of jones. but if you ask someone from La, theyd think of jones and others---personally, i'd add eric martin to the list too. this does open sensitivities of lsu fans that is rarely addressed. for some reason, lsu has generated very few marquee nfl players since jones. particularly if you look at the glamour positions qb, rb and wr. you take the top 6 SEC programs in recent history (since bert) and they have--- UF-emmitt, kearse AU-bo, caddy UT-lewis, reggie white, peyton UGA-herschel, bailey, ward, even edwards and hearst Bama-alexander, thomas LSU--im not sure anyone since jones measures up to the nfl star level of the above. i think its just because of chance. most of the other 5 top SEC programs only had 2 listed. the program drought in the 90s hurt too. im pretty sure none of the above went through a dip like lsu did.
