To be fair...Saban isn't the highest paid...nor was he when he was hired. He only factors into this because of his profile. He's not even in the top 3 highest paid coaches according to SOME figures I've seen. Weis is #1...Carroll is #2...and then it's either Stoops or Miles...depending on what you believe. Saban is behind Miles now...but even if Miles didn't factor in, Saban would still be 4th according to most sources.

And as far as I know, OU was the first to put that stipulation in...but also, as far as I know, LSU had a similar deal in place with Saban...just like they did with Miles.

From what I remember hearing....Saban isn't the highest paid by "salary"....I think it's everything else in his contract that makes him the highest "paid" coach in college football....ie appearances, events, shows, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if that is still the case today.

Saban's 8 year, $32 million dollar deal is the highest by total volume, the 32 mil figure. His raises are scheduled, so he started at like 3.2 mil the first year, then quickly goes up to 3.5, then 4.0. With his incentive clauses, he can go to 4.5 mil a year if he wins an SEC and national championship. If he capitalized on everything in one of his 4 mil a year base salary years, he'd be the hightest.

The important piece is on page 12/13.

Peruse coaches on the hot seat.com, they have some pretty interesting stuff, coaches salary rankings and all.

I don't know what he started at...and wouldn't believe everything I read on that...or ANY site. However, I do know that right now...his second year...he makes $3.75mil...and Miles makes $3.751 mil.

His $32 mil over 8 years averages out to $4 mil a year...but considering that we're talking about the here and now...since that is what was used to determine Miles' salary...Saban is NOT the highest paid coach. Chollie is.

I don't mind the huge salaries at all. There are 3 things that I take into consideration: 1) what's the going rate at other top-tiered schools? 2) does the AD have the revenue/means to handle that salary? and 3) what is the coach's performance or record?

    The answers:
    1) 38 of 120 coaches make $1.5 mill or more per season at BCS schools
    2) est revenue for LSU is what? $53 million for 2008
    3) Miles is 34-6 in 3 yrs at LSU + a BCS title and an SEC title

I say, pay him top-money. We're the top team.

If I were at Iowa, North Carolina, SMU, Virginia or Baylor, then I'd be looking for a return on my investment.

    Congrats to CLM!!!

Makes good sense, can't argue with this logic.
