Phew, Tigers hold on and get a huge W tonight. Always great to beat UK. I have to admit, I did get a little nervous there with that guy draining those threes. Gotta hit those FTs down the stretch. Also great to see Dale Brown there cheering the team on!
HOW DO YOU LIKE 'EM TIGERS NOW?! Great win by the Tigers in the "Ice Dome"... this goes down as the Ice Dome game, and probably shows the country what these Tigers can be capable of. Good call by CJJ to insert Martin in as a starter, go "big", and start Coleman at the 2. Tremendous game by our frontline against the "vaunted" lottery picks of UK. O'Bryant showed why he is a deserving NBA prospect and Mickey, well, was Mickey--all world Freshman. Martin has a respectable and active game. Coleman brought energy and a tremendous line at the 2. LSU appears on the home page of ESPN Hoops. THIS is a quality win, folks. I also think that THIS is the starting line up we need down the stretch. Hickey, Coleman at 2, Martin at 3, Mickey at 4 and O'Bryant at 5. 11 blocks? Shoot a little bit better on your free throws, and it's a blow out. http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/ http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/boxscore?gameId=400506388
Wow, what a game. Not a whole lot to complain about really. There were a few poor decisions here and there, but so much to feel good about. Hickey, JOB, the freshmen (all of them, really). And Jordan Mickey, what a player he is. He was doing it all - scoring, rebounding, blocking.
Well he got that signature win. Excellent job by Jones to get these kids up for Kentucky (not hard to do probably) after a really tough loss on the road. Now, more importantly is to build upon this win, which obviously should give us ultimate confidence to at least compete against anyone we're going to face from here on out. Arkansas awaits us, a team that has had a couple of tough OT losses in SEC play plus a tough loss at home tonight vs Missouri. We need to protect our home court and come out with a W. It won't be easy.
The ONLY thing that still frustrates me is free throws. Could have blown that down the stretch when we couldn't hit them in the closing seconds. Otherwise that was a dominant performance. Me and my boys braved the ice and sleet to go to the game. The parkng lot was a skating rink but my trusty 4500LB gas guzzling, carbon footprint expanding SUV troopered through it.
I follow LSU basketball closely but not college basketball in general (at least until conf tourney and March Madness). Everyone knows that the SEC does not have a very good reputation as a basketball conference. In one of LSU's recent games, there was a graphic that showed a high % of this year's top freshman are in the SEC (obviously Kentucky contributes largely to that stat). Is the conference on the rise? How many teams from the SEC are expected to make the dance this year? Could there be any effects of our (SEC) fanbase being so obnoxious about football that results in a backlash against our basketball teams? I know there are many different metrics used at selection time so it still seems to be very subjective (i.e. easy to make a case for/against almost any team on bubble).
Well I challenged Jones to get his team to back up the Kentucky win with a solid performance and LSU is delivering. LSU 40, Arkansas 23 at the half
It's going to be important for them to come out scoring in the beginning of the second half to kill any comeback hopes Arkansas might have.
If the Tigers win at Georgia this week, I may try to make the TX A&M game next week with a couple of friends. It's a weeknight game but not that far from the Houston area. Anyone know if there is an LSU area or the best way to get tickets? Given the uncertainty of whether we'll actually make it (and how many of us would go), I'd prefer to wait until the last minute if possible.
