Re: 2010 Baseball Regional Brackets/Seedings Based on the four Top 25 polls that came out Sunday: Los Angeles Regional is the toughest. In comparison, look how easy Coastal Carolina, Florida, Cal State Fullerton, TCU, Georgia Tech, and Oklahoma got it at the Regionals that they host... after i have had time to cool down, i'm not so pissed. if we keep playing like we have, i'm not afraid of ANY pitching staff. although if we can hit UCI or UCLA, i think we have what it takes to win another title. but that will be a tough task. UCI has a great staff. UCLA has a great team. it will be tough, but we've been playing LSU-caliber ball again. i'm a proponent of the saying "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger." maybe that tough spell brought our boys together enough to where a road series like this won't phase them. hell, it didn't phase them at the SEC tourney where we beat some damn good teams. can't wait for friday 2 pm! :geaux:
When I saw the pairings, I was actually pretty excited about the challenge. What has me the most pissed is that there's no television. I was expecting to be able to settle in after work on Friday and take in the regional. No such luck unless Cox picks it up
this. i mean, it is the toughest regional, yet espn is not carrying it. that just pisses me off. i really hope the geaux zone will do the right think and carry the audio for free.
It's the toughest regional "on paper"....I don't think the national rankings are very accurate at all. There's too much personal bias there. I think UCLA is overrated and the pollsters just wanted to throw them a bone for not being so sucky this past year. Same reason that they were awarded a regional despite the "Crackerjack box" they call Jackie Robinson stadium. (ps) I'll be disappointed if we don't pull the hidden ball trick on the Irvine Ants...er...Anteaters.. Do anteaters even bite?....or do they just lick and swallow?
To get TV coverage in that stadium, the network will have to bring in their own camera stands. At least they won't block the crowd's view.
I like our chances of winning the regional: 1) our pitching has improved and I believe will be only better in the regional; 2) the team got a huge monkey off its back and a confidence builder by winning the SEC tourney, I look for them to have a good frame of mind going into the regdional; and 3) hey, we're LSU :thumb:
How do you figure that? Looking at the ncaa.org website (which appears to be only be updated thru 5.23): When you look at win pct, it appears that UCLA is ranked accurately at #7/8/8/9, whereas LSU and UC-Irvine are the teams that have a generous ranking in the Top 25 polls: UCLA is #8 in the NCAA with a .788 win pct UC-Irvine is #41 in the NCAA with a .654 win pct LSU is #47 in the NCAA with a .643 win pct Kent State is #76 in the NCAA with a .607 win pct UCLA's strength is obviously their pitching staff, which is statistically the best pitching staff in the nation behind only Texas: UCLA is #2 in the NCAA with a 3.08 team ERA UC-Irvine is #22 in the NCAA with a 3.98 team ERA Kent State is #70 in the NCAA with a 5.12 team ERA LSU is #123 in the NCAA with a 5.70 team ERA UCLA is #2 in the NCAA with 7.42 hits allowed per 9 innings UC-Irvine is #29 in the NCAA with 9.13 hits allowed per 9 innings Kent State is #41 in the NCAA with 9.54 hits allowed per 9 innings LSU is #78 in the NCAA with 10.05 hits allowed per 9 innings UCLA is #1 in the NCAA with 10.3 strikeouts per 9 innings UC-Irvine is #35 in the NCAA with 8.1 strikeouts per 9 innings LSU is #68 in the NCAA with 7.5 strikeouts per 9 innings Kent State is #106 in the NCAA with 7.1 strikeouts per 9 innings Offensively, none of the teams in the Los Angeles Regional are outstanding statistically: Kent State is #78 in the NCAA with a .318 team batting average LSU is #83 in the NCAA with a .317 team batting average UCLA is #96 in the NCAA with a .313 team batting average UC-Irvine is #138 in the NCAA with a .306 team batting average LSU is #55 in the NCAA in scoring with 8.1 runs per game Kent State is #57 in the NCAA in scoring with 8.0 runs per game UCLA is #139 in the NCAA in scoring with 7.0 runs per game UC-Irvine is #177 in the NCAA in scoring with 6.6 runs per game NCAA.com ? Winning % and Rankings hardly tell the whole story which is what Steve is talking about. Baseball rankings are very difficult to gauge and SOS and other factors should also come into play. We have the toughest Regional IMO but it is not by a landslide. UCLA is a beatable host and I am grateful we are not up against UVA and the other powerhouses in regional play.
Yes, I tend to agree with that--that I'd rather be playing in a regional with #8 and #20 then in a regional against one of the top juggernauts like UVA, Arizona State, or whoever the unbeatable teams in baseball are right now.
