Hatcher's thread on this topic from yesterday seemed to stir up alot of debate, so I'm interested to see where you come out. Should LSU continue to let the kids slide down the Indian Mounds? Personally, I don't see a problem with it. It's been a game day tradition for years and the kids love it. Admittedly, I'm no expert, but from what I can tell, the damage, if any, is negligible.
I agree, but they don't want to get sued when the kiddies hit the small brick wall and they don't want to damage it. I've never seen any damage and that's from rolling down them from elementary school to college.
Being sued is an angle I hadn't considered. I don't think anyone's done it yet, but you're right, it's probably only a matter of time. From that standpoint, I can understand it a little better then I can for archeological reasons. Now, if the kids were seriously damaging them, then yeah don't let them. But sliding down them is not hurting them in my opinion.
i voted that they must be preserved, but i'd like to hear more about their historical significance. either way, i guess it doesn't matter to me. i never rolled down the mounds, in fact i have only seen them once. i don't usually venture to that part of the campus.
i've been around the campus, never really paid attention to the levee or buildings -- though the architecture is nice. i usually stay to the south of campus around the athletic facilities.
Personally I think these "Indian Mounds" are quite offensive. In this day and age shouldn't they be called Native American Mounds anyway? That's just plain disrespectful. And really mounds? A slang term for a ladies breasts. Which they obviously symbolize. They should at least be covered and certainly not be in the view of children. I think these racist pornographic monstrosities should be destroyed immediately!
