Come on, now. There's nothing wrong with doing past 10 years, past 25 years breakdowns, etc. But if you're looking at a truly historic listing, you've got to go all the way back to the beginning. Saying that only schools with recent success should be noted is kind of like saying Georgia and USC belonged in the BCS this year because they finished the season strongest.
PURPLE TIGER, you make some great points and you brought out one important fact. In SEC country for the most part, it's all about football (not saying there's anything wrong with that BTW). USC is one of the few schools if not the only one in the Pac that has put a predominant chunk of financial support toward the football program. The others schools (and I can't address outside the Pac cause I don't know) tend to spread it around the other/minor sports. Look at the overall standing for NC's. Stanford, UCLA, USC are at the top and with a collective significant difference. And UCLA is up there with zero football NC's. The Pac also achieves a ton of academic success as well as attracting research dollars. It's just seems to be the focus. I'll tell you the main reason why LA doesn't have an NFL team and it has little to do with "support." The Coliseum Commission was never able to convince any NFL team to put up the money to fix the stadium, build parking, etc. Frankly I am happy not to have a team there. The Raiders were despicable tenants although I did like the Rams. Boxer, Pelosi, Feinstein are ALL from NorCal and it might as well be a different state. Cal students are still living in trees and Stanford IS a tree. What happens up there is as far away from SoCal as you can get. Hollywood is one smalll city most of whose residents are not from California but elsewhere around the country. And as you can see from the writer's strike, Hollywood is dying a slow death and it couldn't happen to a greater group of people.
Check the top tabs, the information you're looking for is available. They even break it down into decades and its actually really interesting to look at some of the really old decades and check out who was dominating who.
How the SEC ranked on that list: 1. Alabama (#2) 2. Tennessee (#9) 3. LSU (#10) 4. Georgia (#11) 5. Florida (#20) 6. Auburn (#21) 7. Arkansas (#26) 8. Ole Miss (#31) 9. Vanderbilt (#49) 10. Miss State (#53) 11. Kentucky (#57) 12. South Carolina (#65)
