I don't know how many of you visit this site, but it's an excellent site for referencing college football history. Their all-time team rankings has LSU at number 10 right behing Tennessee and we've pulled within a couple of points after this years NC. Just goes to show that LSU's success goes further back than the last 5 years. It is truly one of the top programs in college football history. http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/rankings/all_time_team_rankings.php :crystal:
Your link was a little wonky for me, so here it is, hopefully less wonky : http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/rankings/all_time_team_rankings.php
I had projected we would slip just past them but we didn't. Wasn't sure how many points we would pick up in the Schedule column, but it wasn't quite enough obviously. We will pass them up after 2008 as UT will continue to struggle with Fulmer at the helm and their recruiting class this season is abyssmal, to say the least. Their program is in decline and they are not addressing the problem (Fulmer), which is fine with me and all LSU and SEC fans alike.
Did I count six SEC teams before seeing the second Pac-1 school? How many of the Top 50 are from the "left half" of the country?...6? Like I've said before...USC can hang with anybody in the country but to try to pretend that they play the same caliber schedule as the SEC is BS! Review the list and pretend you're a major media outlet. How can you sell your magazine or radio/tv program to the left half of the country if you tell the truth and say that the majority of top programs are on the other half of the U.S.? You can't so you make up an annual story that this is their year and everybody buys your merchandise and you're able to sell your spots to the advertisers. Then when the season ends, it's back to the same song...the SEC finishes well ahead of the Pac-1. And I suppose Princeton, Yale, and Harvard are really knocking it around on Saturdays in the Fall. Notre Dame is certainly in the darkest part of their storied history and perhaps Bama too but they deserve props. And I sure hope Nebraska and Miami can return to some glory as well. There was some great football before the BCS era.
Minnesota at 16? This list is still living on dark ages football. I'd like to see one of these that addresses say, only the last 50 years.
Sort of like a U.S. History book that only discusses wars since Korea? I'm kidding and I know what you mean but football pioneers earned their spot in the record books like anyone else. 60 years from now, I sure hope the younguns don't wipe today's teams off the list.
I am not sure why people don't want to include the past. I can understand not including championships from the early 1900's, but history from the 20's when conferences were being formed and bowl games were around are just as relevant as today. The landscape of college football really has not changed that much. I had an uncle that was a QB when the original SEC was formed in 1932 and the stories he would tell us are just like the ones you hear today. To discredit those teams is a disservice to the game, as they worked just as hard for the wins as players do today.
There was some great football before the BCS era.[/quote] Agreed!...As you can see from the list, this goes well beyond the past 10 years. I have no problem saying that USC is rock solid as a Top 10 all-time program. The winning %, the bowls, the titles, the tradition...no doubt about it. What bothers me and what I get sick and tired of hearing is how the Pac-1 is some storied traditional powerhouse of college football that gets overlooked because half the nation is asleep before they play. I call BS! As I said before, I lived in San Diego for 10+ years so I'm speaking from a little experience. (I'm not about to compare San Diego to L.A. because most native-born San Diegans have no clue what college football even is.) Every year some team out west stands up and plays well. This year it was Hawaii, last year Boise State, one year Cal, one year Oregon State, BYU, UCLA, etc. The problem is that none of those teams (except USC) maintain their status and simply slip back into oblivion. It's not like the SEC where the competition is so high that you can finish second in your division and still finish #2 in the nation. (Georgia) Why hasn't the west been more of a factor over the years?...I don't know. With 30+ million people in CA alone, you would think there would be more than just USC. Then again, L.A. doesn't even have a NFL team due to the lack of support. Maybe they prefer to hang with Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, and Nancy Pelosi smoking a little "medicinal" marijuana. I know you're a very well informed college football fan and I respect your passion for your team. I just don't buy into all the Hollywood-style hype from the west coast. "We're better because we say so." ... only in your own minds.
