BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- LSU has given the NCAA copies of material it received from recruiting service owner Willie Lyles and his Complete Scouting Services.
The school said in a news release Thursday that it paid $6,000 in December for printed information and DVDs of game footage and highlights of 32 California and Kansas junior college prospects eligible to sign national letters of intent in February. LSU also got footage of two players it hadn't asked about, one from 2008, and 91 pages of largely outdated roster-type material from junior colleges in California and Kansas.
LSU is cooperating with the NCAA investigation, and several football coaches met with an NCAA official on campus last week.
The NCAA is looking into Oregon's $25,000 payment to Lyles' firm and his involvement in the recruitment of running back Lache Seastrunk of Temple, Texas.
The probe is focused on what exactly Oregon obtained from Lyles. In recent interviews, Lyles has said that he and the Ducks both knew he was selling access and influence with highly recruited players.
In March, ESPN.com quoted former Texas A&M cornerbacks coach Van Malone as saying Lyles told him the school would have to "beat" an $80,000 payment offered by other schools to get former LSU star cornerback Patrick Peterson to play for the Aggies.
Peterson, who played for LSU from 2008-10, has said Lyles had nothing to do with his recruitment or college choice.

I think that was the smoke screen Oregon initially threw out also.

I've been wondering if/when Tiger fans would start putting 2 & 2 together and realize if Lyles/Oregon was a lot to do with some illegal shyt, Lyles/LSU most likely was also.

I haven't really been following the specifics in either case and may be off here but seems like I'd read it looked like some bad shyt will come from the Lyles/Oregon relationship. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here.

No, you're right. Oregon will get sanctions. It's just a matter of what they'll be. It can be anywhere from probation, to scholarships lost. I don't honestly think they'll have to vacate wins, or get a bowl ban. But you never know with the NCAA. They'll come down hard on cases that don't warrant it, then give light hand-slaps to one's that deserve harsher sanctions (then have it bite them in the arse later- See Ohio State).

IMO, I think LSU showing that they too received outdated information from Lyles, helps Oregon's case more than it incriminates LSU. Of course the $6k vs. $25k is still the biggest question facing Oregon.

I'm just going to bury my head in the sand, enjoy the upcoming football season, and once the NCAA figures out what they'll do, so be it.

I remember LSU and Oregon were both after Lache Seastrunk. I'm willing to bet every major college program has certain "scouting services" they work with that have a strong "presence" in certain regions.

The issue is whether or not the services being rendered were rendered as paid or if the service was delivered after the NCAA started sniffing around.

Sounds like whatever the reason for LSU's connection with Lyles, they seem to have covered their ass by actually receiving the dvds, reports, etc.

I know for a fact that LSU requires specific "deliverables" for any contract and that they are spelled out clearly. Even Lyles stated that LSU gave him an outline of what they required.

That's good information. And a good smart policy.

    yep.

and from everything i have read, lsu required x,y, and z. they received x and y. and lyles gave them his version of z, but it was really v.

it could be, that because they got so much of what was spelled out in the contract, and in the proper time frame, that the transaction was on the up and up, and that lyles was not as good at scouting reports as he advertised.

The NCAA keeps looking for fire even after they locate the smoking ashes.

I think you are a little off-base here. LSU paid for, and received, a substantial amount of valid and useful information, at a reasonable price. It appears that Lyles, a questionable character at best, also transmitted some useless information with the package. That's entirely different from Oregon, who paid a ludicrous amount of money for an entirely useless package.

I wouldnt call it useless. They pulled a couple top talent guys from places you wouldnt normally call an oregon stronghold.

Look in todays world schools are going to push the envelope because the NCAA has been looking the other way for awhile.

Then you get the USC and Auburn crap and they are forced to now start dealing with their lax enforcement and the problems that has created.

Looks to me like LSU made sure to cover their ass and oregon didnt.

It seems legit that schools could pay for info on recruits to a service that would have info on kids that LSU would have to spend a lot of resources putting together.
