To put that in perspective, Appy State gave us $20,000 for Katrina relief when they played us in 2005.

Here's a good article titled "Money Grab: Rising costs of non-conference football games" that makes it sound like small-time programs are starting to get pretty serious about gorging big-time programs when it comes to the amount of money they are demanding to play them on the road:

    http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080824/SPORTS020502/808240355

    Interesting notes:

--LSU is shelling out $2.9 million for four nonconference opponents, the most spent by any Div 1-A school

--The Ohio State AD said "Smaller schools are able to demand more...Is that fair? Probably not...There's not a whole lot you can do about what we're paying for nonconference games; there's anti-trust laws...We've talked about it among athletic directors. It's not a good direction, but there's nothing that we can do about it."

--A member of the Iowa Board of Regents said: "The smaller schools have it figured out that they can charge increasing amounts."

--The Iowa State AD said "Costs are out of control...It's as if sometimes you wonder if you're being held hostage."

--The President of the Drake Group, a national organization that advocates for college athletic reforms, said: "It will continue to spiral until the school presidents or athletic directors say enough."

--The Iowa AD said "Believe me, I don't desire to pay those high numbers...I desire to get the best opponent possible for a much lower amount, but it's getting harder every day...I'm worried... it's not sustainable if we continue to grow at this rate...The big payouts, they're not worth it, but unless I'm going to secede from the NCAA, which I'm not going to do."
On why Iowa agreed to pay Florida International $700,000 ($600,000 more from Iowa than Florida International gets for their game at Toledo), he said: "If we could have found a game against someone like Western Michigan for that date, then we would have filled it that way...We worked hard trying to fit a game into that slot and, eventually, we got to the point where we had no choice."

--The NCAA said it has no guidelines regarding this, saying its a school-related issue

--The Florida International AD said: "We won't talk to anybody in the future unless it's for $1 million or over to go out of the state."

--Iowa's $700,000 payout to Florida International represents a significant chunk of the Golden Panthers' $5 million football budget for a school with an enrollment of 38,000.

--Average profit per only non-conference home games:
$1 million (anticipated) -- Iowa State
    $1.3 million (approximately) -- Iowa (paying Florida Int'l $700K)

--Average profits per all home games:
    $3 million -- Nebraska (82,000 seats)
$4 million and $4.5 million -- Ohio State (102,000 seats)

--The Iowa State AD also said: "it would be reasonable to assume [that these higher payouts] would contribute to higher ticket prices."

The article also has a link to a database where you can see all the pay-outs gained and given by 82% of the 120 Div 1-A schools (the 82% that agreed to disclose their info to the researchers that wrote the article).

Here's how some of the schools fared:

$350,000 -- Mich State to NOTRE DAME
$400,000 -- NOTRE DAME to Purdue

Note: Last season, Michigan only gave $400,000 to Appy State

Here's another article regarding all this:

It’s a simple matter of economics. If LSU makes 2M for a home game and pays out 800K then that’s a 1.2M profit per season. As apposed to a home and home where LSU makes 2M in year one and 0 in year two for an average of 1M a season. It makes more economic sense to pay teams to come play.

That being said, I'd much rather do home and homes with decent teams especially considering the TV exposure we get and considering the financial increase of having to pay schools to come to BR as you mentioned

It's ridiculous. There are twelve teams in the SEC. I say make it a round-robin format in every conference, cutting down on the number of OOC games and then have the winner of each conference play in a playoff.

Of course, that's in a perfect world where things would actually make sense.

I personally think it's greed all around. The smaller schools are raping the bigger schools and the bigger schools, instead of making SLIGHTLY less of a profit, are going to shift the costs to us...and we'll pay it because LSU football is like oxygen to us.

It's a win / lose situation (us being the losers).

It's like holding a monopoly on crack.

Capitalism at its best and everyone is contributing. The schools, the teams, the AD's, but none are contributing as much as the fans. If you don't like it, don't pay the money. Everybody can bitch and moan but if you still go to games even as prices soar, there's no reason to complain to anyone as you are the reason for it all.

No worries there. I can't afford to go to the games because I'm giving all my money to the rest of the capitalistic ventures in the world...for things like gas and food and rent and all the other things that I CAN'T stop buying.

I really don't mind LSU making a ton of money for the games because that's a luxury. It's when I'm stretching the budget to give the CEOs of Wal Mart more money that they don't need for stuff that I can't live without that I start getting my boxers in a wad.

Without a doubt, there is no better system than capitalism. In theory, everybody has a chance and that promotes endless dreaming. Unfortunately for most of us that ends in the "dreaming" stage, and the reality sucks.

Okay, I'm not posting about that anymore...it's almost GAMEDAY!

It doesn't bother me, especially considering the bullchit that is the BCS.
