I understand needing to be mobile but you need size too. He was smaller than most of the DTs he played against. I think we did pretty good with Big Hermon Johnson at LG.
any change in this with the recent scrimmage? jj's numbers looked pretty bad and miles said he had the O in a bad tempo. lee had really good #s. but i know spring #s can be very deceiving.
Red55 gave you good insight. Outside of the freakishly large athletes who can remain quick at 320 lbs, guards and centers don't generally play well above 300lbs. I think Brett Helms was listed at 285 or something, but that dude could not have been more than 260. He wasn't awesome, but he was a good center. I think quickness, hands, and lower body power are what are most important in a guard (besides a decent amount of smarts). Of course, 265 is a bit light. But I'd guess that 285 on a 6'6" frame is plenty to be both strong and agile (relatively speaking)
Here is what I posted on another thread and I got some of the info from a friend of mine who watched the scrimmage. http://www.tigerforums.com/tigers-den/96435-jefferson-taking-ownership-2.html
Very windy day, and Lee has always been a very sharp passer in controlled situations - sometimes even sharp in games. Last season, there was a lot of reporting about how sharp Lee was compared to JJ. This year, not so much. In fact, the opposite. Last year's experience has probably turned the tables.
Interesting. I think it was said of Lee last year that he tore it up in practice, but we obviously saw what happened to him when he was forced to start. I think his head is just shot. But I hope not, because if JJ goes down, we will sure need him to do well.
My friend that went to the Scrimmage sent me this: 1. Russell Sheppard couldn’t catch swine flu if he kissed a pig. He dropped a couple of passes and a kickoff. He did catch a couple also, but the drops were pretty bad. 2. Jarrett Lee got a lot more snaps than Jefferson. He still holds the ball too long, but otherwise looked okay. 3. Jefferson still holds the ball too long. 4. The offensive line looked bad, they had about 6 false start penalties and the running game was weak. 5. Our offensive players still looked confused and don’t know where to line up. 6. We are still running the option… 7. …to the short side of the field. 8. T-Bob Hebert got some major leg injury and it looked like he won’t be playing again for awhile. 9. Michael Ford looked very good at running back, which is good, because he and Ridley were the only ones running the ball, other than Sheppard who got tackled for a loss the only times that he ran it. 10. The defense looked pretty good, or maybe our offense is just that bad.
