This is why I was so confident going into overtime. I told my friends to relax. Look at our red zone defense all night long.
You would be correct. Saban blew it with the clock management at the end of the game. Go figure, huh?
And this is EXACTLY why I had no problem going into overtime. bama's red zone offense leaves a lot to be desired, while we're one of the very best in the nation in converting red zone trips. And leading up to OT, bama sh!t the bed every time they even got close.
I was confident because overtime is a field goal contest, not true football, and we had a far better field goal team on the field.
I agree, that was very impressive. Our defense was lights out when Bama even sniffed the red zone. Great job by the entire group to hold strong the way they did.
IT's a Nick Saban quote. It has to be true. The feeling among many is that starting each drive so close to the goal rewards teams with good kickers rather than those who can move the football downfield. It also penalizes teams with very good defenses, teams that can keep an opponent out of the red zone. The OT drives should start at the 50 or perhaps the long 40. Make a team collect a couple of first downs before getting into field goal range. Else it becomes three inside runs and a kick attempt.
