Where can i get a pair of purple and gold glasses that you people wear? I didn't realize that not getting pressure on the QB is the offense's fault? Not being able to tackle is the offense's fault? Not being able to stop the run is the offense's fault? Getting gashed repeatedly on 3rd and long is the offense's fault? I guess JJ incompetence is the defense's fault then? And dropped passes? And bad play calling? I know the offense sucks, but don't give me that crap about the defense being on the field too much. It's not like we dominate for 3 quarters and get lit up only in the fourth quarter. But if you like a soft zone D, then Chavis is your man.
This is one of the only legit complaints with our defense IMO. It's frustrating.. last season the defense let us down. This season.. the offense. Maybe we'll have both clicking next year.
Jefferson is by no means incompetent. He's improved nicely. I know we're a bit harsh on him sometimes.. because he didn't want to lead this team for a while there.. but he definitely answered the call. Besides, the defense being on the field that long is an issue. Specifically on the lines. Those big guys get tired.. and if you kept up with this team.. you would know that our DL was talent depleted. That's why we couldn't stop a team late in the game when we had to.
By the way, 2008 avg time of poss for LSU: 30:13 2009 avg time of poss for LSU: 28:21 So if the defense staying on the field just 1:52 longer this year means they're gassed by the 4th quarter, then obviosly this team needs to be better conditioned.
When we did blitz, it wasn't disguised well and was picked up rather easily. I agree the D is ALOT better than last year and they are not the problem. Still though, I'm not a fan of Chavis' style. He relys too much on the D-line to pressure the QB and plays too much 'bend but don't break' zone for my liking. If you don't have a Reggie White or Glenn Dorsey (once a decade type of talent) anchoring that line, this style will struggle; particularly in long down and distances when receivers have time to find the holes in the zone - aka '3rd and Chavis'.
This is a great discussion. I'm learning a lot about How we look at the defense this tear. Boy did we miss Dorsey (or his equivalent) this year. I wonder if our red shirted freshmen will step up... especially Montgomery and Davenport. Player development has been a criticism of Miles and his staff so it will be interesting to see how guys like Mingo, Minter, Downs and Brockers come along. I'm also wondering if this tendency of playing uperclassmen becomes an ingrained pattern that affects these players' development. personally, I don't care if seniors start over freshmen...but the best guys have to be on the field most of the time. I wish there were stats that could tell us how many plays and how many minutes each player has in games because it's very difficult to tell from TV and totally impossible to tell from the radio. Those statistics would be useful !!
where did you get these numbers? I was looking at the time in each game and LSU only won time of possession 4 times all year and they were 31.11, 31.59, 33.10, 36.23, and 4 games they had the ball for 23.08, 23.30, 23.40, 21.39, and the rest were each a 25.58, 26.24, 27.08, 28.10, 29.27 and those averages you got just dont seem right.
