Man I was just sitting thinking how much I used to love watching college BB and that I don't or haven't really watched it much in a long time. I was thinking maybe it had a correlation to the fact that LSU BB hasn't been good in a long time. Man I really miss the days when LSU was at least a player in the College Basketball scene. I had more incentive to watch.
2006 was a pretty fun year. For about two months the basketball team was bigger than the football team, then everything went back to normal. I like the squad we have now though, and almost all of them will be back.
1979-1993 under Dale Brown was insane... 15 years, 13 NCAAT Appearances, 5 NCAA Sweet Sixteens, 4 NCAA Elite Eights, 2 NCAA Final Fours, 4 SEC Championships, 1 SEC Tourney Championship, 10 seasons with 20-plus wins, etc But keep in mind LSU was not good the first 5 years under Brown... it's wasn't until Year 6 that he had his first SEC finish above .500, and it wasn't until Year 7 that he got LSU into the NCAAT for the first time as our coach Compare Trent Johnson so far during his first four years at LSU to Dale Brown's first four years at LSU: Dale Brown -- 48-54 overall (34-44 in years 2 thru 4) T. Johnson -- 64-58 overall (37-50 in years 2 thru 4) Dale Brown -- 26-46 in the SEC (17-37 in years 2 thru 4) T. Johnson -- 23-36 in the SEC (10-33 in years 2 thru 4) So there's hope we've had several great years since 2000: 2000 -- SEC Champions -- NCAA Sweet Sixteen -- 28–6 overall, 12-4 in SEC -- SEC Player of the Year (Stromile Swift) -- 19 weeks in Top 25, including last 5 weeks in the Top 10 -- six victories over Top 25 teams, including victories in the P-Mac over #5 Arizona, #9 Auburn and #11 Kentucky, a victory over #11 Oklahoma State in the New Orleans Arena, as well as away victories over #19 Auburn and #15 Texas 2001 -- victories over #14 Ole Miss (P-Mac) and #18 Georgia (SECT) 2002 -- victory over #17 Georgia in SECT 2003 -- NCAA Tournament -- 21–11 overall, 8-8 in SEC -- 5 weeks in the Top 25 -- victories in the P-Mac over #1 Arizona and #7 Miss State, as well as a victory over #7 Florida in the SECT in New Orleans 2004 -- beat #22 Florida @ Florida 2005 -- NCAA Tournament -- 20–10 overall, 12-4 in SEC -- SEC Player of the Year (Brandon Bass) -- victories in the P-Mac over #14 Alabama, #22 Miss State, #24 Florida 2006 -- NCAA Final Four -- SEC Champions -- 27–9 overall, 14-2 in SEC -- SEC Player of the Year (Glen Davis) -- 16 weeks in the Top 25 -- victories over #1 Duke and #9 Texas in the NCAAT, beat #13 West Virginia @ WVU, only lost by 1 to #2 UConn @ UConn 2007 -- 22 weeks in the Top 25 -- victories in the P-Mac over #3 Florida, #6 Texas A&M, and #18 UConn, as well as a victory over #22 Tennessee in the SECT 2008 -- nothing good about the season, Brady gets fired 2009 -- SEC Champions -- NCAA Tournament -- 27–8 overall, 13-3 in SEC -- SEC Player of the Year (Marcus Thornton) -- 10 weeks in the Top 25 -- in NCAAT, beat #22 Butler and then gave #1 and eventual champions UNC their toughest game of the tournament 2010 -- nothing good about the season 2011 -- nothing good about the season 2012 -- victories in the P-Mac over #11 Marquette and #23 Miss State -- 5-1 in SEC home games
also, keep in mind we return all 5 starters next year, and we return 4 of the 5 starters the year after that on top of that, we'll have new recruits joining the team every year
There is enough talent in Louisiana for LSU to have a compettitve Men's BBall team. No doubt about it. 1.) Coach has to do a great job or keeping the best LA players in state, OR - he has to continue to bring in good players from OOS that can stay 3-5 years. 2.) Recruiting must be balanced - we need quality bigs, PGs and wingmen. 3.) The fans have to do their part too. Pack the PMAC. Fill it with passion, emotion and yes, intimidation, just like Tiger Stadium. Give our boys a home court advantage. You want to help LSU attract quality players? Pack the homecourt and make it loud!
That was my freshman year, and I was at most of those games. The Arizona game was insane. I've never seen the PMAC rocking like it was that night. THAT was a fun season. Stromile was amazing to watch, and Jabari Smith was a lot of fun to watch as well.
Shoulda been there in 1980 when we played Kentucky and Kyle Macy. He beat us at the last second w/ a jumper of about 30 feet. I'm telling you, that night the bolts holding the roof up were vibrating loose. Early 80's was the shizzle for BB.
so far it has been the problem but that will change when we start winning and continue to add first class facilities. to say it will always be the problem is a bit fatalistic IMO.
So, this is your conclusion in just his 4th year where he took over a team in the doldrums talent wise? You don't think that success breeds interest? Baylor's coach is in his ninth season, and is now getting top talent (and doing so in Wacko, TX). I'll bet in his fourth season, he was not getting top TX talent (or from anywhere else consistently) and Baylor fans were touting the same thing. It takes patience and effort to build effort a program. People need to quit bitchin', stay patient, and start supporting.
