Not great quality... http://fanbuzz.com/story/lsu-big-man-prodigy-was-destroying-the-competition-in-australia/
Rick Mattick was a 7 foot clumsy piece of useless meat who couldn't do anything right but in the 1979 playoff game against Magic Johnson's Michigan State team he played like a polished, dominating big man with all the moves in most of the first half and LSU was in the lead. Then he dribbled the ball off his foot and out of bounds and went back to being a big tub of goo. I was in a bar one time when the door opened and Mattick and Andy Campbell both walked in at the same time just like Lenny and Squiggy did on Laverne and Shirley.
yeah im pretty certain he didnt lace his own shoes. dont recall him but i remember hearing the name. im still awaiting tito horford to arrive on campus.
Rick Mattick was the first 7-footer ever recruited by LSU. White guy, big man very strong inside and played hard for four years in limited opportunities. Dale didn't use him enough, he really wasn't a bad player, he was just slow and could jump about 6 inches. In the right offense, he could have been the typical "aircraft carrier" center of the 70's. A rebounder and defender with a hook shot or turnaround jumper. No inside moves to the basket, though. But LSU had the best team in its history at the time. Macklin, Scales, Carter, Martin, and Cook. These guys played fast on offense and defense...fast breaks, steals, dunks, alley-oops, and long shots before the 3-point rule. Mattick couldn't run with them. But there was no shot clock then. When Dale wanted to slow the game down, he could replace three 6-9 jumping big men with two 7-footers who cleaned the glass and then jogged slowly down the court. Andy Campbell also played 4 years and got even less time than Mattick. He was about 7-3 with the longest arms you ever saw. He could dunk without jumping. But he was awkward and skinny. Big men pushed him around inside, and quick men mad a move on him. But you could not shoot over him less you caught him with his arms down.
