    Re: Hoops Recruiting (2009)

2009 continues to be a BIG year for new coach, Trent Johnson.

Rivals just came out with their new Rivals150 for 2009.

    Rivals.com Basketball Recruiting - New No. 1 in Rivals150 for 2009 class

    Of LSU interest,

Keith Gallon comes in at #31 (4-star)
Karron Johnson (drops) and still lists LSU, at #50 (4-star)
Tommy Mason Griffin gets on to the list (finally) at #72 (4-star)
Terrence Shannon is listed at #115 (3-star)

Other items of note. The articles talks about where the kids are from and Texas and Georgia make up #2 and #3 of the states where the Rivals 150 comes from. No wonder why LSU has to be in those southern states. How many kids from LA this year? Zero. And, that can't help CTJ in 2009.:dis:

Also of note, TMG's move into the top 150 comes along with him doing pretty well on the AAU circuit. He was named a top performer in the Cactus Classic.

I've got to imagine that our staff was there, and at the Prather tourney where a lot of the GA kids are playing...

What's been troubling so far is the lack of mention of LSU in these reports. Chalk it up to the "transition" perhaps, but 2009 is a big year with a lot of schollies to give. Coach Trent Johnson should be a pretty big name, although honestly you wonder what his "street cred" is coming from Stanford (not used to recruiting the big names). I would have liked to see him make a bigger splash on the recruiting circuit. It seems a lot of the kids really associated LSU with Butch, and as much as folks don't want to admit it maybe the kids tolerated or didn't mind CJB so much. My impression is that CTJ gives off a different vibe, a much more, "no nonsense" kind of vibe that worries "top-flight" recruits. Nevertheless, I'll be waiting for who will be CTJ's first LSU "signature" recruit. I've got to wonder as well, what CTJ really thinks of a TMG-Keith Gallon line up to build his program around. If that connection doesn't come through, CTJ's got to rely on more unknown guys that "want to be at LSU" perhaps... that and building on kids like Storm Warren, Delwan Graham, Dennis Harris, and Bo Spencer in 2009 (and add Tas' M, of course, since he's here for two more years). Kids that play hard and run CTJ's system?

I'm hearing that Mason-Griffin has little to no interest in LSU now.

    And, this doesn't help any.

2theadvocate.com | Sports | Pierre opts for job at Oklahoma St. — Baton Rouge, LA

And, now you see why LSU's name hasn't been all over the recruiting rags. Butch has been actively NOT recruiting for LSU.

We're in the hands of a former LA Tech HC, Coach Trent Johnson's long time assistant Donny Guerinoni, and CTJ himself for recruiting our next class.

I wonder what the Temple family is thinking of all of this? Maybe this paves the way for Randy Livingston to come back to LSU? I can dream right? :)

Would love to see Linvingston back, Guerinoni is young and seems like he will be good with getting to know kids and getting them to Baton Rouge, losing Butch isnt the end of the world.

Hold the phone on Mason-Griffin, he told a writer on tigerbait that the new staff is after him hard.

Question. USC had a verbal for Malik Story but he is not going to qualify. I understand he transfered to a Ribet Academy in La. Anyone familiar with it and any chance he might be looking at LSU?

    dunno.

recent espn article said nothing about it.

ESPN - A look at the 10 most significant recent developments on the recruiting scene - Insider

"Following his stellar freshman campaign, allegations emerged that Mayo accepted improper gifts before his enrollment at USC and during his time as a student. If current investigations find truth in these allegations, the Trojans will undoubtedly face sanctions that will have a major impact on their recruiting immediately. Top-10 prospect Demar Derozan has stated that these accusations could lead him to seek a release from the letter of intent he signed with USC. The Trojans have verbal commitments from other talented prospects -- including Malik Story and Leonard Washington -- they also could lose if they are penalized as a result of the investigation."

Well, so far the new LSU coaching crew, who added Donny G from Stanford over the weekend, have a lot of catching up to do...

Kourtney Roberson, probaby the best of the LA 2009 prospects is turning heads and NOT listing LSU as a leader. Instead Tim Floyd seems to be in the forefront. Some of these LA kids would just rather get the limelight and bling bling instead of putting in the honest day's work it seems. it may take a USC probation to shut that down...

Roberson's list has been like that since last year; I don't think it's been updated. I don't think we need to worry just yet about this one. Coach Johnson stressed keeping the best players instate, so I trust he will do that.
