Never too early to talk about baseball. Interestingly enough, the UC Irvine coach who did such a great job last season quit unexpectedly after promising he wouldn't (pulled a mini Saban) to go back and coach his Alma Mater CS Fullerton. He was replaced by Mike Gillespie who used to coach for USC and will keep the current assistant head coach and heir apparent who used to work with Coach Savage who is now at UCLA but used to be at USC. Congrats on a great class Tigers.

Sorta hated to hear that. Saw the Anteaters when they played here in the Super Regional against UTexas. Seemed like he really had that team going in the right direction. They were fundamentally sound, they hustled, they battled, and they were a lot of fun to watch.
There were hurt feelings after he made the announcement particularly because he'd said he wouldn't leave. In his defense, he really did want the job but knew a good friend of his also wanted it so he said he wasn't interested to bolster his friend's position. Once he found out that Fullerton was no longer interested in his friend, he moved forward. He also wanted to make sure the job stayed "in the family" so to speak. The predominant thought coming from many of the Athletic teams at UCI is that the Dean is not a fan of athletics and doesn't do much to support them.
