this was a heads up from nootch. the coaching carousel at LSU is in motion. most dont know who he is but hes an up and comer who will likely succeed somewhere given time. The Paul Mainieri coaching tree is adding another branch in the Southland Conference. Longtime Tigers' assistant coach Will Davis will take over as the head coach at Lamar in 2017, replacing legendary Jim Gilligan at the Beaumont school. Davis played at LSU for both Smoke Lavaland Mainieri and has been on the Tigers' staff since Mainieri arrived in 2007. Over the last several years, Davis has emerged as a rising star in the profession as Mainieri has added more responsibility to his duties. The third-base coach the last three years, Davis works extensively with catchers and outfielders and was prominent in the development of former LSU standout Kade Scivicque, an All-SEC pick last season and the runnerup for the prestigious Johnny Bench Award. Elevated to a role as a designated recruiter in 2011, Davis has also been valuable as a talent evaluator. Teaming first with Javi Sanchez and then Andy Cannizaro, Davis helped LSU land recruiting classes ranked No. 7 in 2011, No. 4 in 2012, No. 10 in 2013 and No. in 2014. The son of former Tigers assistant and Louisiana Tech head coach Randy Davis, Will Davis played at Lee High in Baton Rouge before joining Laval's program. When Mainieri arrived, Davis was one of a handful of player who was retained and he became the Director of Baseball Operations the following year -- which culminated with a trip to the College World Series, one of four Davis was part of as a coach. He has also been instrumental in three SEC championships and five conference tournament titles. Last spring Davis was a finalist for the job at New Orleans, which eventually went to another former Tiger, Blake Dean. Dean and Davis join Terry Rooney, Cliff Godwin and Brian O'Connor as former Mainieri assistants coaching Division I baseball. O'Connor guided Virginia to the College World Series championship last June.
If you're not sure who he is, you can skip (per) over that part of the discussion. Isn't Beaumont about a 3 hour tour from Baton Rouge.
Will is gonna do well there. Great baseball mind and a solid assistant. taking over a program on good footing in a good baseball conference.
