This is the voting thread for the best fullback. The top two from the poll above will make it on the team. I'll take the final tally sometime tomorrow (the same time the wide receiver nominations close).
Personally, I would say Hester....but he was way more than just a fullback to me. I hear Art Cantrelle was a nasty s.o.b. I talk to him sometimes at the local watering hole where I live. Nice guy. The old timers tell me stories. I would like to have seen him play. That being said I voted Hester. He was amazing. I couldn't imagine anyone being better than him.
Most of the stories about Cantrelle are true. He could be a mean MF when he was drinking. What is he doing now? Hester was great but he made his greatest contributions in 2007 as a running back. The only reason that Jim Taylor is not a runaway winner in ths poll is that most of us didn't see him play in college, but he is in the NFL Hall of Fame.
I went with Jacob Hester for lots of reasons: 1.) His leadership during the '07 season 2.) He played FB, HB, caught the ball out of the backfield, picked up blitzes, AND PLAYED SPECIAL TEAMS as a Senior starting RB. 3.) He has a BCSNC Ring 4.) 1,100 yard senior season 5.) As long as I live, I will never forget the 2007 4th Qtr drive vs Florida. They just kept calling his number. :crystal::geaux::crystal::geaux::crystal:
I voted for Jimmy Taylor. Althogh I never saw him play at LSU, I saw him many times playing for the packers. Taylor was the first back to gain a 1000 yds for five consecutive years in the NFL. Golden Boy, Paul Hornung, set scoring records but it was Taylor who carreid the ball down the field to set up the scoring play with Horning carrying it in the end zone. If I remember correctly, the year that Hornung set a scoring record, Taylor gained nearly 1500 yds in a twelve game season. I saw him lay out and catch passes that you would think were impossible for a man of his build. I've never seen any player give greater effort on a football field than Taylor. He fumbled only 34 times in the 2,173 times he handled the ball. Miles would have loved him. He finished his career with 8,597 yards and 83 rushing touchdowns, highlighted by his five straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons from 1960-1964. Taylor also caught 225 passes for 1756 yards and 10 touchdowns, and returned 7 kickoffs for 185 yards, giving him a total of 10,539 net yards and 93 touchdowns.
I see him out everytime I go out on a Wednesday night. When he shakes my hand, it feels like he's trying to crush it. As far as I know, he is working security at the Beau Rivage Casino Resort in Biloxi. I don't think he wears the monkey mall cop outfits...I think he's some sort of director of security or something.
SS, Props to you for holding good nominating process and elections. This is interesting and fun, good offseason activity. Course, THE SEASON IS GETTING CLOSE NOW!!! :geaux:
