You misunderstand what I'm trying to say. In 2003, we hadn't won the year before (or 40 years before for that matter). I'm strictly talking preseason polls here. On paper, LSU is just as strong as anyone in the top 5. Since we just won the NC, we obviously have shown we can do it. I just think our personnel combined with being reigning crystal winner warrants at least a #5 rating. Florida didn't do it last year and they don't bring anything to the table except Tebow, yet they get into the top 5. Based on what? Last year, right? Georgia is everybody's #1 based upon what? A strong finish combined with a rout of Hawaii. That was last year. Why does that carry any more weight than winning the damn thing?
I hear you SF, but I mean, they did go 12-2 last year and won their division of the North and return nearly their entire roster. If they were like 8-5 or 7-6, I would understand. But they had the same record as LSU did and return more skill players. The only thing they did not have was the losses falling into place at the right time like LSU did. They deserve to be where they are.
Likely in the top 2, what did we start at last year with Matt Flynn as the upcoming starter? I think with the RP hype we would have been ranked at least as high as last year.
The AP is all about perception and media...and everybody knows just how superficial that can be. It was said that on paper, LSU is just as solid as any of the 6 teams ahead of them. Although that is true, a person has to dig deep and look at the men in the trenches to make that determination. Nobody with a superficial mindset (see above) will take the time to do that. Each of the teams ahead of LSU has at least one player on the Heisman radar and Mizzou - like it or not - has two. LSU has zero. Our depth and all-roundedness (yeah, that's a word!) is what is going to make us great this year.
The AP poll continues to be a joke as evidenced by some of the voters ballots. How an idiot like Taylor Zarzour got a vote defies logic. http://pollspeak.com/index.htm
Oh yeah! That's the ticket. Since the BCS inception, I believe only Leinart in 2004 won both the Heisman and the NC. They hardly go hand in hand.
It has been proven on many occasions that a 1 or 2 loss team which doesn't make the conference championship will get picked over the loser of the conference championship in the BCS. See Kansas 2007, LSU 2006. Kansas in 2007 had only 1 loss after the Big XII CCG, Mizzou had 2.
Nice job trimming my post to suit your rip. Kudos. I said that AP rankings are superficial, and there is nothing more superficial in CFB than the Heisman. Thus, thinking like a small-minded prick behind a laptop, when you compare the top seven teams in this list you automatically assume that due to their accomplishments last year and the returning superstars this year...LSU is behind all of them. What BIG names are returning this year? WE know them all...but does the rest of the nation? Dorsey, Steltz, Highsmith, Hester, Flynn...all gone. Outside of Tiger Nation, I'll bet that there isn't a writer that can name an existing standout LSU player on this year's squad. So no...it doesn't surprise me at all. Thinking superficially, LSU isn't as good as these teams. It's a good thing I know better...
