I was doing some research on www.ncaasports.com and I noticed that LSU shared a NC in 1908 with Pennsylvania. Does anyone know why does LSU not recognize this National Title? I also noticed every time we've won a NC, we shared the title. Maybe this year can/will be different.

I don't really wanna do the research right now...but if you do a little more research, you'd find that LSU has at LEAST 5 NC's...including the 1908 of which you speak.

Fishhead, I'm not doubting you, seems like alot of people recognized their own NC but that site only shows 3. However, I was curious on why LSU does not recognize the earliest one.

Most folks recognize AP & UPI National Championships only before the BCS came to be.

Years ago there were a lot of independent organizations that would pick or choose a National Championship Winner.

If OU wanted to, they could claim 16 National Championships as a result of what I just mentioned, but they don't. They just officially recognize 7 that are AP, UPI, or BCS.

    Just my two Cents.

I think Alabama is one of those schools that do recognize all those possible championships and claim 21 or whatever. USC is another school that also does it.

Most programs only count the titles since the "modern era" of football, in the 1940's. Before that there was no forward pass, obsolete rules, and many schools played club teams, athletic clubs, and military teams as well as tiny colleges. There weren't a lot of national rules and illegal elligibility was rampant. Some schools played 4-game seasons and other played 18 games. There were multiple claimants to every title.

After the NCAA came along, divisions were established and rules implemented. In the modern era, LSU has 2 national Championships and Alabama 6. If pre-modern championships are also claimed, then LSU has 4 more and Alabama 6 more.

The 1908 team was a great team and legitimately the third best in Tiger History. Undefeated and dominated their opponents. Quarterback Doc Fenton was LSU's first All American and Hall of Famer. And rumored to have played four years in the northeast at a small college before showing up at LSU and playing four more.

A few years ago USC retroactively claimed the 1932 NC or something like that because, I guess somebody looked it up and saw that one of the polling companies liked them. Tacked on another NC for it.

I had family on that 1908 team, so they're always national champions to me. :LSU231:

Here ya geaux...sorry, but it's VERY long. I counted 6 for LSU. This is from a post I made on a fishing site a few months ago to show the Bammers on that site how they got some of their alleged NC's...and also to show them that even Auburn and Old Mess have some NC's according to Bammer's high standards.

USC now will recognize its 1939 football team as a national champion, giving the Trojan program 10 national titles in the sport, Trojan athletic director Mike Garrett announced.
    ...
"It was brought to our attention by various individuals that we should be claiming the 1939 Trojans among our national champions in football," said Garrett. "We took this matter seriously, did significant research and determined this to be true. ..."

Thanks for everyone's info, I also found something on Wikipedia that kinda wraps everything up:

"The NCAA's website states that "the NCAA does not conduct a national championship in Division I-A football and is not involved in the selection process." It goes on to say that "a number of polling organizations provide a final ranking of Division I-A football teams at the end of each season." LSU officially claims only two national championships (1958 & 2003), however, the school has been recognized as national champions by polling organizations on 4 additional occasions: 1908, 1935, 1936 and 1962.[3] (The NCAA officially changed the "I-A" designation to the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in 2006.)"
