Because at that time there were No other inteties to issue a credible championship, the AP at that time was the most notarized and famous ranking system out there, since it was replaced and agreed upon by the bcs by ALL coaches and ALL universities it is now the standard, the AP is still trying to hold on to it's own glory and tries to discredit the bcs whenever possible. The bcs is what is agreed upon by all college universities and coaches....simply put it's the only one that matters since it's inception.
Who cares? The AP did not produce a champion that anyone was happy with. With all of its flaws, the BCS is far better.
So friggin' what? The NCAA does not recognize the AP either! The BCS is recognized by the conferences and schools who have signed on. The AP has not.
You are just being contrary and are making no sense. Before the BCS there was a madhouse of organizations each proclaiming a champion. The BCS was created to name a champion and keep any playoffs from killing the bowl games, which a 16-team playoff would do. There may be a 4-team playoff someday to replace the BCS, but guess what? The AP would become even more irrelevant.
The BCS replaced the poll system starting in 1998, it didn't wipe out the 100 years of college football history before that.
Especially after watching all the bowl games thus far, I can't imagine anyone offering a serious argument against the BCS. It's clear which teams are the two best teams in the country. Frankly, it was clear Nov 5th, 2011. The bowl games to this point have cemented it.
Hmmm...have you ever read the writing on the "Crystal"? The UPI Coaches' POLL" Almost annually, the BCS hasn't either. And if the BCS if "far better" why are people, more than ever, screaming for a playoff? Here are just a few. Not even touching the undefeated SEC team that didn't sniff THE game. 1998-99 season The first year of the BCS ended in controversy when one-loss Kansas State finished third in the final BCS standings but was passed over for participation in BCS bowl games in favor of Ohio State (ranked 4th) and two-loss Florida (8th). 2000-01 season Florida State (12–1, ACC Champions) was chosen to play undefeated Oklahoma (12–0, Big 12 champions) in the Orange Bowl for the national championship, despite their one loss coming to another one loss team, the Miami Hurricanes (11–1, Big East champions), that was ranked #2 in both human polls. 2001-02 season Nebraska was chosen as a national title game participant despite being ranked #4 in both human polls and not winning their conference. The Huskers went into their last regularly scheduled game at Colorado undefeated, but left Boulder with a 62–36 loss. The Buffaloes went on to win the Big 12 championship. However, the BCS computers did not take into account time of loss, so one-loss Nebraska came out ahead of two-loss Colorado and one-loss Oregon, the consensus #2 in both human polls (but 4th in the BCS). Nebraska beat Colorado for the #2 spot in the BCS poll by .05 points. Nebraska was routed in the national title game, 37–14, by Miami. Meanwhile Oregon also routed Colorado in the Fiesta Bowl, 38-16.
They need to look at the big picture. This is an opportunity to put Alabama down twice in one season. Think about that for a second. Think about the Bama fans and the suicide rate in that wretched state. Think about the blood vessels in Saban's head popping when he realizes Miles is his daddy.
LSU has much to prove. Bama still thinks they're better and so do the people betting on the game. There's also that crystal ball we're playing for. LSU fans were disappointed but they knew Bama was the 2nd best team and they wanted to beat down Okie State. That's the only reason. It's not cause we thought they were better but because it would have been an easier road to the crystal ball.
It should be noted that since pulling out of the BCS formula after '03, the AP has nevertheless agreed with the results of every BCSCG since.
