i cant remember the last time ive been exposed to someone smoking unless it was a bar (that i chose to enter).

and im around many smokers. all the females in my family smoke.

yet oddly, im never exposed to it. NEVER.

so its strange to me how anyone can be around so much smoke from others they dont even know. who the hell ever gets that close to strangers; much less all the time.

    weirdo alert.

I was forced to be around smokers my entire childhood because my parents were smokers. I'm sure our house reeked of it, and I'm sure that we, in turn, reeked of smoke. I didn't notice that I smelled like smoke then because, quite frankly, many more people smoked in the 70's and 80's, and one could smoke wherever they wanted.

I was sick constantly when I was growing up and never made a connection to it possibly having something to do with my parents' smoking, but my daughters have quite possibly never smelled cigarette smoke, and they are rarely ill.

When we went anywhere in the car (especially during the winter when the heater was on), I would crack the back window and stick my nose out the window like a dog. My parents would then tell me I was going to get sick because of the cold air. And I would usually reply that it beat getting lung cancer from their smoke (I was, admittedly, precocious.)

In '94, my dad had a heart attack, likely caused from his years and years of smoking. The night we brought him to the ER, he vowed never to smoke again, and 15 years later, he never has. I firmly believe he'd be dead today if he hadn't made that wise decision.

So, personally, I find smoking disgusting, as it's the one dark mark on an otherwise pleasant childhood, where I was raised by two wonderful parents.

Tirk and Nootch make excellent points about government intrusion. I just think that smoking is an emotional issue--for both smokers and non-smokers. I absolutely love being able to go anywhere in Plano and never, ever encounter cigarette smoke. But the government often sticks its nose where it doesn't belong. So, I'm torn, though I, personally, like smoking bans.

i was never sick and my mom constantly smoked. I think maybe I was always healthy because I was never exposed to non-smokers.

mentally, you were already sick. i work with a chick like that. she always has purell at her disposal and a salad. yet still always sick.

my dad had one in 2000 and he never smoked. likely caused from not smoking or maybe simply genetics.

    dark mark? seriously.

this shouldnt be about emotions or repressed childhood angst. its about private property rights, rights inherent in the constitution. the same way you can invite someone in your home and smoke a cigarette in front of them and they are able to leave if they choose.

Interesting thread. I think Texas has mandated the same paper that USCvball mentioned. I was with a friend a few weeks ago that complained about those being the only type they could get in Texas.

I am not a smoker(cigars occasionally), and I am very much against smoking in my family because my father died of emphysema. Pretty bad way to go.

All that aside, I can understand why some buildings might be non smoking, but I don't get the bars and restaurants. Most restaurants have had tiny smoking sections for some 20+ years now. And many have an entirely walled off section for just that. Smoke actually bothers my allergies quite a bit, but I really don't deal with second hand smoke anywhere. I mean anywhere, and my job is to go to restaurants/bars daily.

The only time I am affected by second hand smoke is if I get into a car driven by a smoker. Even if they are not smoking while I am in it, I am bothered by the residual. I solve this by not letting my smoking friends drive me anywhere.

There are some things the govt should regulate, like the sale of guns to felons, but smoking? No, I just don't get it. Society is squeezing out smokers without any help from the govt. Today it's smoke. Tomorrow it's your cheeseburger. Then it's alcohol.

But don't worry, the govt. won't ban any of that stuff. They will just slap a luxury tax on your 3rd shot of tequila. You know, 'cause they care about you, not $$. :thumb:
