i don't know, if you read most of the past criticism of the option on LSU boards, it was from people who had no idea what they were talking about. basically, most of the criticism was thinking it's like Techmo Bowl, where it always makes more sense to run the option to the "wide-side" of the field rather than the "short-side." i agree that JJ wasn't executing the option well last year, but it was only a tiny minority saying that, the rest just thought the option was stupid, period, especially the option to the shortside, and those people were, and still are, incorrect IMO
This sums it up. The call took MAJOR BAWLS....When performed to perfection = great call.... :milesmic:
If you like Brad Wing's stats this year...imagine if he had played last year. JJ at QB...option...option...option...punt Does anybody remember what game this season we first used the option? Does anybody know what game JJ actually pitched the ball to the RB? Does anybody know how many times we used it before the Alabama game? Several here have said it has worked well this season. What are the stats? Inquiring minds want to know dammit!
Did you read that link to see how it was a gimicky play? We overloaded to the right and ran it to the weak side- away from the extra blocker. Additionally, Faulk managed to pin two defenders inside- the last pic shows him. Alabama's adjustment was to overload the offense's right side to the point that it was undermanned to the weak side. People saying the option's been working well ALL year must have missed the games Jefferson was suspended?? Anything would work well against Kentucky, Florida and Tennessee this year.
even had we not overloaded the strongside, the weakside still would have been undermanned. the basic concept behind running the option to the weak side is because the weak side (the "short side") is the side that has less defenders defending it, that's why it's called the weak side. the DC is always going to shift his defenders to cover the wider side of the field, the strong side the other reason you run the option is to spread out opposing defenses, it's a whole another attack they have to worry about when they are making their split-second decisions on what play is coming at them... it also makes them eat up practice time practicing to defend it... it also wears them out having them run sideline to sideline trying to defend it... etc it's great stuff to have as part of your offense
I'll admit, .. it is great stuff to have as part of your offense. It's not great stuff to have AS your offense. How many Touchdowns did we score against Bama running the option for 3 quarters ?? hmmmmmmmm
