Hopefully once Mills is back as a full time starter the DB's will improve. I think a lot of it is scheme but the players are not making plays either. No reason LSU should be allowing that many passing yards when you have to shut down CB's. We often see the opposing O taking advantage of schemes. Steele doesn't change things up and teams see that. I hope Miles makes the change to O after the season. Offer Steele LB coach and if he is pissed so be it. O at DL and DC would be golden.
The blown coverages were the only thing I didn't like about this game as far as the DB's were concerned, especially Jefferson. Hopefully he turns around his play as he is going to be on the filed a lot. The only thing I didn't like from the dline was letting Harris get outside on the right side all night long, poor Key would have had several sacks if the other end kept the edge.
Lewis Neal had 10 tackles, 3.5 for a loss, 3 sacks and 3 QB hurries. Neal now has 7 sacks on the year and for those that are curious what the single season sack record at LSU is, it's 12. If Neal keeps this up he could break that record and if he does it will be well deserved because the gauntlet is looming for LSU, the toughest games are ahead.
Just because you keep winning it doesn't mean everything is working correctly. Fact is LSU squeaked by Miss St and UF when they should have won each game easily. Part of it is trying to sit on a lead with pathetic play calling, part is special teams, and part of it is teams taking advantage of a lack of adjustments from the defense. I recall some calling for changes right away, I gave it time. I see things getting worse, LSU have given up far too much passing yards going up against second string QB's and beyond. That is inexcusable. Call me a minion, but I expect to see improvements over the weeks. LSU has not shown any improvements from the defensive side. Coach O has the DL improving each week. The back ups have even looked much better the last few weeks. I think he would bring back the nasty intensity to the D that LSU has been known for.
I'm not against criticism and the expectation of improvement. To my eyes, we have improved on the D-line, offensive play calling and QB play. While I agree the secondary is allowing big plays when we have them at 3rd and long, to be fair, we are also playing tougher competition with bigger/faster players along the lines and at the skilled positions. Thus, it's hard to judge "improvement". Clearly our secondary (esp on 3rd and long) and STs are our Achilles heel. Unfortunately, the play there draws our focus, and takes away from the positives. We are undefeated, ranked in top 5, and #1 in computer compilation poll, all positives, and we don't turn the ball over, and we are improving in several specific areas of play. Just some thoughts.
My criticism here was strictly on the defensive side and the lack of adjustments. I do not see any issue with criticism of Steele. We do not see any adjustments what so ever from LSU. I do like what we see from the DL.
