This article has the essence of what we must remember when we celebrate today. Forget the horrible misleading title and read it. The Marine memorialized was a great young man who never doubted his place....nor do his comrades in arms. It should bring a tear to your eyes and fill your heart with pride.
Spec. Conde was the 2,264th member of the U.S. military to die in Afghanistan. His parents ask why.
    The Washington Post

A Colorado family buries their son who was killed in action and ponders what he was fighting for in the 17-year-old Afghan war. Read the full story

It's completely crazy that we have been there for 17 years. When we finally leave that shit hole it will be no better than we got there.

Actually we should not “celebrate” Memorial Day. It should be a day of rembrance and memorializing those who have fallen for our country.

I have received several FB posts wishing for a “Happy” Memorial Day. Ugh!

Yes we should have gone in kicked ass. Then we should have left them with a warning that if they helped terrorists again we’d hit them harder.
Unfortunately we didn’t bag OBL or other leaders and wouldn’t leave without getting. Finally it turned into a country building operation......for a land that wasn’t a country.

The Russians should have learned from our experience in Vietnam. We should have learned from their experience in Afghanistan. Fighting wars where there is not a clear cut objective of total victory is a lose-lose proposition.

I understand you guys comparing this to Nam. HOWEVER not quiet the same. The Vietnamese were not planning and carrying out terror action in our country from there country. I will say that the real enemy is Iran. This is where the head of the snake is. I believe we need to concentrate our efforts there.

Kiki you’re right that Iran is a serious enemy but I don’t think they’re the existential threat that Russia and China are. I would say Russia is a midterm threat and is strategic threat. They have the means to threaten us and our allies. They are also attacking our strategic alliances. Putin has created a criminal organization to gather and wield power with limited if any restraint. Most of all he sees the US and west as enemies. He is a trained agent of the KGB and is rebuilding the Russian armed forces and working to penetrate western governments. However I do think there’s a limit on haw far the Russians can go. Their population is dropping rather than rising and without Putin it would likely become a failed state.
China is the long term threat.....as long as the communists remain ruthless and in power. It has the population and is building the industrial strength to challenge us in the near future. After 500+ years of looking inward it is in an expansionist phase. The Chinese are securing raw material sources in Africa and establish hegemony in the critical South China Sea. I don’t think they see us the same sort of enemy the Russians do, but I think they want to be the leading country in the world and hold hegemony in Asia. At some point that will become a real threat to America and our allies in Asia.
    We live in interesting times.

No question that both Russia and China are threats but not in the same way. As far as pure terrorism its Iran. Also Iran unlike Russia and China is driven by an extreme religious ideology and are more dangerous because of this. They must not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons. China especially needs the US financially so dont consider them to be a threat to pick a fight with us. Lastly Putin is a fairly bad guy but far from stupid and WILL NOT start a war with us.

One more thing this aint Clinton or Obama in office it's your dreaded Trump. Both China and Russia know Trump unlike the other two will not take their crap.
