Well, I wouldn't say that the better team wound up pulling through...that might be true for Texas, but we still were up 35-7 at the beginning of the 2nd half, so it seems somewhat unlikely. As for LA Tech, I can't even begin to explain that because it just blows my mind. I don't know much about their program, but I don't think it was a case of the better team coming from behind at the last minute, I think it was OSU's coaching staff slacking on the defense because they had some "wiggle room." I'm sure if you went to www.okstate.com and looked in the archives concerning our football games, you'd find some better explanations of what went wrong. The LA Tech game was in 2002, and Texas was...Oct or Nov 2004. I'm just a girl who's only beginning to scratch the surface of college ball so it would be way out of my limited knowledge to even begin to speculate what kind of coaching problems led to those outcomes. However I can tell you the stories floating around on our campus that have a lot less to do with playcalling and a lot more to do with Miles' character as a coach. Basically, it depends on who you talk to, but I know in the case of the Texas game it came down to not making adjustments or listening to his staff because Miles is Boss and what he says goes.... At the very end of the 2nd quarter Texas started picking up momentum a little. No one knows "officially" what went on at halftime, but my physical therapist works for the team and she swears up and down it was Miles' ego and refusal to listen to the suggestions of the rest of his staff that was our downfall--he thought he had it in the bag and didn't want to change anything despite our OC pointing out that Texas was gaining. Supposedly Gundy even flatout told him that if he didn't start making some changes, that Texas would come back, and Miles just basically laughed in his face. Granted this is all hearsay, but Mindy was there and said she saw the whole thing happen, and she even likes Miles so I can't see her making it up. If you listen to other people, the story is that he was on the phone during the entire halftime with LSU officials instead of focusing on the game, which is also supposedly the reason for the lack of preparedness we had for our bowl game. While the Alamo Bowl theory is probably true, I think that this Texas explanation is a lot less likely than what Mindy told me. Basically my point in all this rambling is that it just seems like he relaxes after a certain point and celebrates early. He's pretty proud of himself, as I'm sure you'll see in some of his press conferences this year, and doesn't take criticism well, so when he gets up on a big lead he pats himself on the back early and doesn't follow through. He could be a great coach if it weren't for that, but his ego has gotten in the way of more than one game and definitely more than one press conference, and if you ask me, his attitude was the reason for a disappointing end to what could have been a great season for OSU. However I think that with the talent LSU has, you guys will still be okay. The SEC and a strong program like the Tigers won't stand for some moron letting his big head get in the way, and I'm sure Miles knows that. Hopefully this UT fiasco will teach him that it's not really over until there's no time left on the clock. I'm sorry I couldn't give a more concrete answer. My husband's the football buff in this family, if he has some downtime I'll sweet talk him into giving his opinion. I have many, many rants about Miles, much more than this, but he's your coach so I'll show some respect and stop here. Despite my very negative feelings toward Miles, I'll be pulling for the Tigers this year. Everyone at OSU has had LSU in their prayers for some time because of Hurricane Katrina, and I know how great it would be for LSU to have a stellar season, especially with the absence of the Saints. God bless, and good luck with Florida! :helmet:
Give Ron Zook some credit, he could at least recruit! This clown Miles is taking LSU for a ride down a broken one-way roller coaster. Can you be happy with 7-8 wins each year? Ask yourself this ? Forget having a Top 5 program! LSU will never see another #5 ranking again with Les Miles.
