I still think that Crowton is calling plays from a Les Miles approved play chart, and those plays are going through Miles, who has the authority to veto those calls and call his own. I think that's also why Les wants Crowton in the booth, because if he were on the field Les would have a tougher time vetoing calls he doesn't like.
This game tells me nothing. Im very glad to beat the Snake in the grass but Im still not at all happy with Miles and Crowton. Sure it was great to FINALLY see them open up the play calling. But they still didnt do it enough. LSU was doing well when they actually went down the field. Yet we only seen it a few times. Everything thing else was the typical, crappy, predicatable 5 yard curls or WR screens. Its ridiculous. LSU is handcuffed with this play calling. If anything it shows what could be with a coaching staff that would actually open it up a bit more. The execution has been horrible, but agian, I think a lot of that is on coaching. The play calling cant help confidence either.
Saturday didn't change anything we know about Les Miles; He recruits talent well His players play hard for him, I never understood where the 'Has Les lost the team' thread came from He is ballsy to a fault He inspires loyalty in his players and assistant coaches; probally because he is loyal to them He runs a clean program And he will make you scratch your head and wonder WTF at times Oh yea - he is a good coach You can expect more of the same as long as he is the head coach of LSU. Including WTF moments, exciting wins, clock management glitches, grass eating type moments, discusting looks from the other sideling when he gets over on them [insert pictures of Meyer and Spurrier after no look flips] . .all of it. BUT - he makes it work, somehow. He is now 5 and 5 against Saban and Meyer; the two guys generally annointed as the two top coaches in football. He has the team #5 in the BCS with three games left in the season. Really, he has had this team prepared for Saban everytime he's played him. He lost one in overtime, and the other in a tight game after injuries to the starting QB and running back.
Im obviously not much of a Miles fan right now but I do give you that. He often has you scratching your head, but he does somehow win. Have to give him his due on that one.
Has Miles been coaching the QBs the last 3 years as well? Did Miles call the plays from 2005-2007 too? opcorn:
I know who we think is, GC, but some of the players had said that there were certain plays they had been working on and Miles told them he was going to call those plays, of which he did.
Here's how the playcalling thing works ... It's collaborative. It's Crowton's job, he calls every play, but Miles has override/veto power on all calls. Also, if there's a certain play Miles likes, he can obviously "suggest" that Crowton call that play to begin with. And obviously any 4th down decision goes through the coach. It's no different than any other OC/HC situation, I'd think. The head coach has final decision making power on all play calls.
