Also, I don't take the thread's intent as indicating lack of perspective, disrespect, or bashing, just simply conversation/discussion about CLMs pros and cons, and comparing to other coaches results.
And it wasn't being conservative that made those beatdowns happen. I love that Miles is, as tirk suggested, bat shiit crazy. That quality makes him a perfect fit for south Louisiana.
that is exactly what this thread was intended for, regardless of what the all knowing all seeing mighty trash heap tirk says. i am glad miles is our coach, he is a good coach and an even better representative of LSU, his moves at times have been questionable, and someone mentioned Virginia Tech, then you have Miami, Notre Dame, and Ohio State, all of which are non conference, those are the 4 games i thought the talent level matched the play on the field and the outcome. you can't deny that Miles has taken some risky moves and it has paid off, the 5 first downs against Florida, the last second touchdown pass against Auburn, but there have been some instances in losses that have left everyone's head scratching. Kentucky in 07 and abandoning charles scott who dominated the first half, the complete lack of discipline of last years team and the team in 05 who led the SEC in penalties, loyalty to certain personnel, all in all, there are some head scratchers, and what i am wondering is has he learned from those mistakes. I hope he has, and i will continue to cheer for him and hope he stays and keeps this program where it is today. He has done a remarkable job, with an at times unruly fanbase, and hats off to him. But to sit here and act like he is without flaw, and not being able to bring it up in discussion without 10 or so people on the attack making this thread out to be an attack on miles is ridiculous. Constructive criticism, look it up.
Come on. Lay off of tirk. SabanFan calls him a great American... Florida led the SEC in penalties last year, I believe. If the penalties are for playing aggressively, they aren't that bad. I think we also led the SEC in penalties in '07. Last year, despite what you called a lack of discipline (and I do agree with that), our team was way down on penalties from where we've been. We were also way down on wins. So, I'm not sure the penalties are as big of a problem as most people think.
BIG difference. Saban loses games that he should win before, during and after the game. Not just looking back and saying "dam we shoulda had that one." He has a habit of losing the type of game where he should be emptying his bench in the 2nd half of a blowout. NOBODY thought UL-M was a crap shoot. NOBODY thought UAB was a crap shoot. NOT MANY thought Utah was a crapshoot. While at Michigan St., he lost to Louisville (their 1st year in conf USA). These are games that his teams should ALWAYS win, and win convincingly 95% of the time.
fla led the nation in penalties in 06 = NC we led the nation in penalties in 07= NC hawaii led the nation last year not fla = nevertheless something can be said for the refs and how they call games for the perceived "better" teams. or maybe it was just a coincidence. also i think penalties are calculated without taking into account how many games are played (i could be way off here) meaning if a team plays 14 games as opposed to 12 or 13 it's obvious their chances to garner the most penatlies increases.
you have to look at the type of penalties, if its pass interference, defensive or offensive holding, that is speculation by officials, false starts and offsides, and personal fouls are penalties that you need to keep to a minimum.
