I would never fault Miles for being conservative. I would fault him however for not necessarily putting the best people on the field that give you the very best chance at winning. That was most evident in the Auburn game in 06.
and the ole miss game when he insisted upon playing vincent at tailback. we barely won that game in OT, another game we would not have won without JR.
i was at that game, and i broke out my LSU purple Vans for the first time, i haven't worn those shoes since. That was also the first date for my wife and i. She bought me LSU tickets i had to marry her.
looks like you made a good choice then. i was there too, and i'm telling you that was one of those games i was not happy but relieved with the W. (see troy)
I was pretty critical of Miles up until the time he won a national championship. I still have small lingering doubts, but those are outweighed by confidence in the guy (at least right now). Saban is far more conservative and was a good coach who had his flaws. It seems to me that Miles hasn't really had a dominant team from start to finish, but he has always fielded a damn strong team (with the exception of a good many games last year). But Miles made the right decision with Perrilloux and we lived the results of that hard decision. I honestly expect this team to be ferocious and I expect we will rip a lot of teams to shreds. This may be one of the most complete teams Miles has fielded (in my mind). I love the stable of coaches that we have right now. If we bumble this season, there is trouble in dodge. If we rumble, I'll accept that Miles may very well be the greatest coach to roam our sidelines.
in this day and age, i feel just the opposite (of the original post). miles, although batshiit crazy and a bit off, has fielded the most dominant teams start to finish ive experienced now and any LSU seasons prior. his teams come to kick ass and take names on a regular basis. had won numerous top 10 games in a row and dominating the bowls on a regular basis. if you dont think this is the most dominating streak in LSU football history, you're going to have a rude awakening in the not so distant LSU future. this thread is really about a complete lack of perspective.
Nick Saban's 2001 (relative to where we had come from) and 2003 teams were two of the best teams LSU has fielded in its history. That said, I agree that Miles has matched that plus, and I'm expecting greatness this year. I seriously think Miles could be the better coach overall and LSU benefited dearly from having that succession of Saban-Miles on the sidelines. Well WTF does this mean? I don't like that line of thinking one bit.
To support what you are saying, and be balanced in criticism here, the Va Tech beatdown was probably the most impressive, nearly complete game I think I have ever witnessed the Tigers play. Couple that with the impressive bowl games against ND, GaTech, and OSU, and he does come to kick azz and take names. There still are the games that LaSalle is referring to that are head scratchers sometimes, but you will see that with any program/coach.
