I didn't know this kid but this has hit me hard. My 25-year old was home visiting and I hugged her extra hard. I know Les has grieved over this because he truly, truly cared about that kid. What a great man.
and I believe that it was the family that went public with this, not Miles. If they had not done so, we would never have known, nor do we know how many others Miles has given that most precious of commodities, time.
What struck me when I first saw the video the family posted of Miles' call/conversation was that he probably didn't expect it to be public. In talking about game planning- generally- he can be heard saying, "They can't stop him." He was referring to LF and the WKy game but still. Knowing how he keeps his cards close, I know he wouldn't have said that publicly.
Talking to Les in person is completely different than with the media. Night and day just like with Saban. They both say a lot about nothing to the media and usually the same message over and over. In person Miles is a great communicator with everyone and especailly recruits and families.
Who thinks that Tom Rinaldi's heartbreaking feature on Saturday in Tuscaloosa will be about Sid Ortis? This story has hit me hard. Sid was only a little older than my 9th grader. He didn't have enough time here, but at least, he isn't in pain now, though his family will mourn him forever. Both of my daughters were devastated when I had to tell them yesterday that Sid had died.
i guess this is what real fn strength is. what a great family and example of class under the worst imaginable circumstances. one can only hope there is a better place for this kid.
I hope Sid is in a better place too but I hate that expression as well as "at least he is not suffering any more." Just find a cure for cancer. No 16 year old should have his life cut short like that.
