In middle schools and sometimes HS, coaches who don't know sh1t yell at officials. The coach that does know is making adjustments, etc.
I would love to have been around to see what all the bama fans though of coach saban when he wasn't at bama but at lsu beating bama. I bet they didn't have nearly as nice words for him.
Can 't be close to as bad as the stuff LSU fans said then did an about face at the rumor of him possibly coming back.
I've seen him lose his cool with the refs before, but "lose his cool" is relative. He does just enough to let the ref know that he's not in agreement with the call (or no call), but shows great respect to the refs. Later on in the game, I'm sure it pays off.
Early, I think just before kick off, Les was cracking one of the refs up. He had the guy practically doubled over laughing.
Look, Nick coached here five years and we can see the difference. The players all respected Nick, but there was no closeness. Nick is just not a warm and fuzzy guy. He terrorized AD staff in the hallways. He was popular because he won football games, not because of any personal charm, the man has damn little of it. Les is completely different. These players would lay down in the street for him. The respect is there, yes, but there is also a warm personal relationship. He's not aloof like Nick. Nobody ever saw Nick around town doing things ordinary people do. Les gets out in the community, he attends all his kids sports games like any other parent. He goes shopping and is easy with the public. Nick was a loner.
Yep. I think they were laughing about the difficulty we were having getting the ball to stay on the tee. And 30 seconds later they threw a flag on us for being offsides. I don't think Les was laughing then.
I remember last year (or maybe the year before that- some of you guys may remember this better) Les got upset over a call and challenged it. He didn't turn red with rage and scream like some coaches. After the call was over-turned he was standing behind the ref- not yelling- but just talking and even one of the commentators read his lips saying "Coach Miles said- Don't worry about it you'll get the next one right" The ref never looked back at him but didn't look upset, in fact, he looked like he was trying not to laugh. Does anyone remember which game that was?
