LSU got used to just lining up and wearing people down. We couldn't do that against a team as talented and deep as we are. Our winning strategy didn't change from what it's been the entire season, Alabama's did. Genius, or common sense? I feel the apology was needed. Everyone saw who was ready to play and who wasn't. To not have your troops prepared for the biggest game of their lives is inexcusable. At least to me it indicates either one person has unquestioned say on game play matters offensively or the the coaches don't think well as a group, because the "what if" strategy was so obviously not there. I think it was more of the former because a group think probably would have concluded a QB change was needed at some point. I hope this blows over soon, because it's just not a good thing to dwell.
Funny thing, coach, is that anyone with any cursory knowledge of football did see this coming because of your hopeless attachment to a weak QB and a horrendous playbook.
THIS! Mett could not have done any worse then JJ but atleast I would have been satisfied to see a change in the game play.
3-step drops are for 5-yard passes. Everyone has been complaining that Jefferson and Miles did not get the ball downfield. You cannot throw the ball downfield on a 3-step drop; it is solely and specifically for short routes. Now if you're saying we should have had some west-coast pass plays implemented, that's an entirely different issue.
7 steps should put you about 11 yards behind the line of scrimmage. It is run all the time in long-developing pass plays so as to allow the QB enough time to let the routes develop.
What frustrated me ... is that Miles didn't stick with what was working. I went back and looked at the play by play ... the shorter, 6-8 yard routes were open, and being completed. But Miles just couldn't help himself. He'd complete a 7 yrd pass ... then run ... or throw that god forsaken WR screen for a loss. [God .. PLEASE .. I don't want to ever see that play again] On the fouth series ..we completed two 6-8 yard passes in a row .... then three run plays in a row and a punt! I wanted to pull my hair out. Especially since Bama was doing the exact same thing to us .. but they stayed with the pass.
One time he was streaking down field with no one around him, but JJ couldn't find him. He is a one read qb and forced the ball to OBJ. Incomplete I might add.
Some are saying that Lee wouldn't have done any better against the pass rush of Alabama. Quick throws to the TE could have negated the pass rush. LSU couldn't blitz because Bama kept dumping it off to the TE. Doing that might have slowed down their pass rush, allowing Lee to throw it downfield.
