Thanks for that perspective. Now if only we could get the minority who will always be unhappy with him to at least give him support. I don't buy it. He flew all over the country just to have lunch with two of the best "Michigan Man" coaches in college football? Sounds to me he got rejected now he's saying he didn't want them anyway. Sort of like the guy who gets turned down repeatedly at the Homecoming Dance so all the girls must be lesbians.
I have a question. The politics of Michigan have been discussed and competing camps seem to be constantly at war for power and control. No coach can be expected to achieve in that hostile an enviroment. Does lsu have the same political in fighting and is this the norm in college football?
I have another question. Did Miles decide to stay at LSU after meeting with Michigan officials OR did Michigan decide to go with Hoke after interviewing them both? It's one thing to say that Miles decided on his own to stay rather than he had no choice but to stay because the job went to someone else. Was he ready to leave, if offered the Mich job. I have not read this entire thread, so sorry if this has already been answered.
I think it is irrelevant whether or not Michigan offered Miles. I read one article in a Detroit paper where they claim that Miles was never offered in 2007 either. That my be true. But does it really matter? Les removed himself from consideration before he was technically offered in 2007, which might actually be more relevant and a truer gauge of his commitment to LSU. This may have been the exact same scenario Monday night. Les met with the AD out of respect and may have told Brandon that he is happy at LSU but is willing to listen to what they have to say. In essence this would be the same as saying "Unless you are going to provide an overwhelming offer, I'm not interested." At that point, Brandon realizes it is not even worth the time to make an offer that might be disappointing (or insulting) to Miles. At the end of the day, Michigan and LSU both win. Hoke will be good for Michigan and we get to keep Les. Brandon also gets to say to the pro-Miles boosters at Michigan that he tried.
I think it works like this. They both know the meeting agenda; both sides have already spent a lot of money setting up the meeting with consultants and travel and so on. The conversation goes on for hours and resembles 'I'm not asking, but if I did what would you think' and it may escalate to 'I'm not asking but if I did what would you say'. Michigan can now come out and say 'Hoke was always our first choice, we never even offered the job to anyone else' which is bunk. If Harbaugh or Miles wanted the job we know they would have it - maybe other people also. I think Les seriously considered the job. He has Michigan friends that were begging him to take the job. Only Les knows if he ever would have said yes. And I think he took this opportunity to stabilize his position as HC of LSU. I have no problem with any of that.
Les may have been coy with the Michigan AD, but you can bet your ass that Les' agent required an offer with numbers and perks that Les had an opportunity to review.
Yep. But as I stated before it wasn't necessarily just about money. Job security had a lot to do with it. My guess is he wanted a commitment that let him know that in 3 yrs, if things weren't up to the fan bases liking, he wasn't going to be sent out to pasture. Something UM probably couldn't do, but LSU could. As I said the booing fans wouldn't be why he left, but could be the trump card for LSU. To a certain Kluke, yes I knew how this was going to turn out. A lil birdie told me.:miles:
