Steve Spurrier Nick Saban Bobby Petrino Want me to go on? There are more College HCs that have failed in the NFL than the other way around.
You just described Bill Parcells. Everything Miles has said is that his dream was to be that college head coach to spend 10-20 years at a school before retiring. He wants to be the Bo Schembechler or Joe Paterno of a school and it looks as if LSU is going to be that school. He just doesn't seem to have the ambition to be an NFL coach.
This phrase "Napoleon complex" has always bothered me, because it is not true that Napoleon was short. He was of average height for his day. In any event, the English wrote the history of Napoleon, so, we have to expect some bias. COACH MILES would make the biggest mistake of his life if he took a HC job in the NFL.
Bo Schembechler was from Ohio, not Michigan. That's why the advice to go elsewhere and make it his Michigan rings true.
For all his faults, Bo understood how to build and sustain a program and leave a legacy. Bo played for Woody Hayes at Miami, Ohio, and was an assistant of Hayes at Ohio State - then was head coach at Miami, Ohio before going to Michigan in 1969 where he made his mark. I think that's the basis of his advise to CLM. I think that is what Les is trying to do at LSU. I think he is well on his way. ldskule:
Like Saban, I don't see Miles as an NFL coach. Even less so, really. Not a knock on Les. He has done a great job with recruiting and maintaining this program. The NFL is just a totally different animal and most college coaches just can't make the transition for all sorts of reasons. Anyway, I hope he stays, but it is natural for hard-up NFL teams to look at top college coaches. After all, they are in the business of making money and when your team sucks, the only thing you got is hope and a name.
