Also, Miles is 3-0 in bowl games at LSU, Meyers is 2-1 in bowl games at Florida. You could also look at their head-to-head record, Miles and LSU are 2-1 against Meyers and Florida 2005 -- LSU 21, FL 17 2006 -- FL 23, LSU 10 2007 -- LSU 28, FL 24 It's also noteworthy that Meyers and Florida are 0-2 against Tuberville and Auburn 2005 -- didn't play 2006 -- AU 27, FL 17 2007 -- AU 20, FL 17 However, Meyers and Florida are 2-1 against Richt and Georgia: 2005 -- FL 14, GA 10 2006 -- FL 21, GA 14 2007 -- GA 42, FL 30
Gonna get blasted for this, but I don't think Miles ranks in the top 5 in the SEC. Don't get me wrong, he has done what has been asked of him, and you cannot deny his record while at LSU. But the entire time he has been here he has had more talent than anyone else in the country. He was average at best prior to that. Now where I give him an A+ is in the hires he has made to put himself in the position he is in.
"power rankings measure overall career performances as well as their most recent results" Urban took over a 2 win Bowling green team and went 8-3 in his first season and 9-3 in his second season. Meyer was then hired on at Utah where took over a 5 win team, went 10-2 (won conference title) in his first year, went 12-0 (won the conference again and made it to a BCS bowl) in his second year. Get's hired at Florida, pulls in the number one recruiting class and wins the national title in just his second year. As a head coach, Meyer has never won fewer than 8 games. Over his seven seasons as a head coach, Meyer has a win percentage of 81%. Over Miles's seven seasons as a head coach, he has a win percentage of 69%. If you're gonna do overall record, you have to include OSU for Miles and Bowling Green and UTah for Meyer. That being said, I'm glad we have Miles.
so was Gerry Dinardo, and the wonderful Nick Saban. Hell they both were average coaches before and after leaving LSU...Funny how that happens. I won't argue that the assistant coaches Saban, and Les hired, while at LSU...were far superior than Gerry Dinardo's. But Gerry did more, with nothing, when starting out. He however, did bring the talent level up, in his later seasons. But it was apparent that his coaches and his offense philosophy, couldn't use the talents potential. Now Saban benefited from Gerry's classes, as did Les from Saban. But the difference was that coaches wanted to come to LSU, and showcase there skills as a play caller. Once LSU was back on top, coaches saw LSU as a "cant miss" springboard into the limelight, and better jobs. Les is a good coach, but a even better person, Because he's kept his word up till now. And he's never sugar-coated anything, or shied away from controversy. If there's one thing he's learned from Bo Schembechler, it honesty, and genuine love of your team, will bring you success.
Miles won't get the respect he deserves because he's not smooth in front of the media and the cameras. It's a video clip world. Fact is no longer important. It's all about facade - very Hollywood. To get the respect he deserves, he'll have to continue his current success for a few more years until it's absolutely undeniable. And even then, he'll get grudging respect because he doesn't tongue kiss the media the way some of these other folks do.
Funny, I consider being ranked the 4th best coach in the country plenty of respect. A couple of years ago, not too many here even wanted him to be the head coach here, despite only having a two loss season. All three coaches ahead of him also have National Championships to their credit. Where's the disrespect? If he wins another title, surely he'll move up the list a little more.
I'm sorry, but I do not give Meyer quite the same amount of credit that you do for winning in the MAC and the Mountain West conferences. :nope:
In his time at LSU, . . . USC, Texas, Florida and Georgia have all recruited better than LSU. LSU has top talent, yes, but not "the best in the country." So was Nick. A coach has to win with what he's got and what he brings in. Les has done so. He's recruited better than Nick and has a better record than Nick.
Sorry - I was referring more to the general "Miles is a reckless idiot" meme that the men at ATVS so eloquently debunk. It seems that even when folks are giving the team credit, this theme of "stupid 4th down calls", etc., still works it's way into the discussion - and not in a respectful way. My thought is that, if Miles were smoother, his ballsy calls would have been embraced, not scoffed. You're absolutely correct - #4 is PLENTY of respect. :thumb:
I think there are plenty of teams that have had consistently better recruiting than LSU during his time here. No need to list them all - we know who they are. That one just doesn't stand up for me. Well he did turn OSU around pretty quickly. Before his arrival they had endured some pretty rough times and he certainly did not get the talent there, did he? One winning season in twelve before he got there. He gets three winning seasons in four, goes to three bowl games, and beats Oklahoma two years in a row, and with his worst team to boot. I will give him credit for that. 89 - 4/7 90 - 4/7 91 - 0/10/1 92 - 4/6/1 93 - 3/8 94 - 3/7/1 95 - 4/8 96 - 5/6 97 - 8/4 98 - 5/6 99 - 5/6 00 - 3/8 01 - 4/7 - Miles' first year and he beat Oklahoma 02 - 8/5 - Beat Oklahoma a 2nd straight year. When did Texas last do that? - Bowl Game 03 - 9/4 - Bowl Game 04 - 7/5 - Bowl game I would agree with this part at least.
